Well, After working on my pic of a girl I took out my old lion that I did forever and a day ago (2 or 3 weeks). Then, in 1 night (maybe 1/2 hour to an hour) worked souly on making the colors and textures up to snuff and adding (unfortunately, yes adding) a background. First, we have the lion with background
Then the lion without the background
and finnally, the origonal (crapy) lion
I'd atleast like to think I've gotten better (all due to this fourm I might add)

Umm can't really help u with your coloring, but my suggestion would be to give up on that lion.. Proportions are waayyy off... and the colors look really random just like u picked a couple colors that looked good and just randomly spattered them on.
I'm sure you have improved, so try drawing something new; I believe you'll find that your drawing skills have improved.
Don't spend lots of time on one drawing unless you think it's absolutely beautiful; rather, draw until its decent, which i believe the original lion was, then GO ON to a new painting. This way you will define your drawing skills, which is absolutely necessary before you try to go and color on the computer. If you really want crits on this... HIS right front leg is too wide and too short, HIS left front leg is coming out of his stomach..
back feet and tail are nice tho the tail kinda merges with the back feet there.. the head is mucho big, and the mane just like morphs into the rest of his body.
again, nice, but my suggestion is, draw something new.

Hmm... here is a little advice. And I am in no way an authority on this, but I think I'm ok.
HERE IS THE APPROACH
1. Find a reference picture.
I would go to www.ditto.com. Search for whatever you wanna draw. [right click --> save pic as]
2. Start with thick brushes
Pick a tick brush in photoshop, and lay in the general forms. Usually darker colors are better.
3. Put in details.
Once you have a rought idea of the shapes, you start putting in more and more specific shapes, and then details.

edit- damn, I really can't spell can I?
Yea, sorry bout all the typing errors, was on the way running out the door for a trumpet lesson. I've been working on a new one, just got frusterated with how crappy the lion looked, and really wanted to fix it... I guess you can't fix a bad sketch origonally. (Not to mention I just splotted paint on over the origonal, which didn't help)
And Hlid Skjalff, I'm 15 and just got my wacom tablet. to you
And lastly, aNoah, since you slipped a reply in while I was typing, thanks for the tips, I have not used reference pictures and basicly have always thought of the internet as a craphole that you didn't want to go near for references.
Well, thanks for the replies, I've learned one thing; ahh, nevermind, I'll just start something new

I think that an important quality of an artist is to be able to let go of a piece, and start a new one. If you can't do that, you will never finish your first painting... you'll just want to improve it and improve it. You'll never be satisfied.
