How about some sort naming standard for topics in this forum?
Since I don't think this forum is going to be sub-split anytime soon, this might make things a bit easier. As usual this comes as a result from my frustration of feeling that I'm unable to keep up with the forum.
What am I referring to? Well, here's a sample list... if you've used one of these before, please don't feel like I'm picking on you, because I'm not. However, these represent TOPIC headers that really aren't getting the point across of what's supposed to be in the thread:
-First Post
-My Picture
-Another One
-New Sketch
-I need help
-What do you think?
-2nd Round
-My first [insert your own, painting, try, sketch, etc]
-Hey everyone
-Hey artists out there, ETC
Headers that I think might be more useful:
For threads you need help with.
-"HELP: Portrait" or "HELP: Soldier design"
For threads requesting critiques
-"CRIT: Self-Portrait" or "CRIT:
For threads containing art, and thus naming the thread most accurately as to what the piece is like.
-"Dogboy", "Warrior Priest", etc
-"QSTN: My Wacom driver crashes" or "QSTN: Painter vs. Pshop?"
-"DRAWCLUB: Superheroes" or "DRAWCLUB: Crackwhores"
-"ATTN: Craig Mullins Signing" or "ATTN: Gabe Reiser sighting"
I'm sure you could add more to these or modify the ones above. Ultimately, I hope it will help to make navigation easier on the boards. Personally, I'm going to start using the above in my personal posts, but this isn't going to make a whole hell of a difference if its just me...

sounds reasonable
I can offer also to add unique number and persentage of done job to each new thread like:
HELP #00001 025%: blah blah blah
HELP #00002 075%: blah blah blah
HELP #00003 100%: blah blah blah

I personally wouldn't really wanna do that... It's hard enough to get replies as it is now, and that's with the freedom of making your titles as eyecatching and/or deceptive as you want. |

In a perfect world maybe, but I think with the amount of newbies coming in here on a daily basis I just don't see that happening. I think Dhabih should seriously consider splitting up the forum though. But if he does that I think moderators will need to be made to keep the proper posts in the correct forums. I like to look at pictures.. plain and simple. I don't want download animations or check out websites that someone thinks is "neat". The forum does move fast and I'm probably partially at fault, because I like to reply to everyone. Next thing I noticed I bumped a cool thread down the page. I'm trying to break that habbit though. |

I'm with Tinusch. What is this? Some sort of fascist regime? Is conformity really so necessary?

I have to agree with Liquid.
To solve the problem with newbies, have a notice up when someone enters the forum

Some thoughts on what you guys have said.
SILBER: My thoughts exactly. Don't think it makes things any more difficult, just potentially easier.
CYBER: I think adding a 'percentage done' is an excellent idea. That way you don't have to start the post with, 'Well, this piece isn't quite done...'. It's difficult to tell sometimes, if someone is finished or not.
TINUSCH: How would this convention cut down on traffic to your posts? If anything it would increase it! I'd rather look at "Wolfboy with banana" than "hey new pic". If anything increasing legibility in the forum will only INCREASE views to your thread NOT decrease them. As far as being deceptive/eyecatching, go ahead, no one says you can't. However, personally I am generally not inclined to respond to a thread you'd trick me into reading. Afterall, I'd feel like a dunce..
CHAPEL: Most newbies observe for a while. Most likely they would get the clue,I think. Since you like to look at pictures you won't have to wade through posts that are ambiguous. Such as a thread calle "Question". Is it a question about pics, or wacom tablets, or directions to the nearest burger king? You don't know, and thus you end up looking at a thread that most likely has no pictures, or potentially you miss a great post WITH a picture, because it was named "Question".
ABUTTLE: Yes. This plea at clarification and legibility is a clear attempt at a facist uprising. Our movement began 4000 years ago with the invention of the written word, with the goal to enhance and clarify communication amongst people, and we won't be stopped until our facist goals have come to fruition. Damn you caught us. You will conform. Oh yes, you will...

Liquid!: The newbies saying they've read the forum for a while is a myth. The ones that say are usually the ones that turn around and ask a question about Wacom tablets. |

I'm up for that; Similar to a mailing list, or a USENET group, where a [TAG] is used ie: [RANT] [Long] [Help] ..etc

What ever happens we should NOT split the forum....
This will just decrease posting trime and increase clicxking times....
I want all the topics in ONE neat area. each topic will recive more exposure thanif the forum was split up. I mean I dont want to go through checking 5 forums a day 1 is hard enough...... |

yeah headings are like advertising sorta. if it appeals to u, u'll read and maybe reply.
if u want replies even if u had naming standards as such while it may make things clearer, it won't really increase replies.
yeah..my 2 cents i guess |

Ok how about this... if you are making a new post without a picture it should go in random musings. Simple as that. The way this forum seems to work is someone asks a weird question that they think is art related in then later on someone else asks the same type question because the other guy did... next thing you know we have 10 new posts all over on the same subject, and not one of them will have a picture in them. |

Chapel, that "must have picture to belong here" rule doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. With that rule, we wouldn't have had many interesting theoretical or philosophical discussions (granted, many or most of them originated from someone posting a pic, but...)

That is my point... those philosophical discussions (even this post) should be in Random Musings. That is all they are.. a random musing. I want to see pictures. |

Well I enjoy looking at pictures too, but I also like reading the questions and tips people post in the Digital Art forum as well. In my opinion, im happy the way the forum works, why change it? Organizing it the way some of you are suggesting seems too tedious. But, that's my 2 cents, if any changes were ever made I would still enjoy this place

This originally was intended to be a digital art discussion forum, not a gallery for everyone to show off their work. Moving non image-filled posts to random musings would defeat the original purpose. I think there is room for both, questions/discussions and picture posts. Random musings is for things that are not related to digital art at all.
I do agree, however, that we need to use common sense and discretion when making topics.

How about including those naming standards with the icons?? is that possible,
like when you make a new post, you can use the Icon which applies to one of those, and it'll include a few words to catagorize it?
dhab? |
