Ok, I need advice.
I'm a senior in highschool (17yrs old) and I love art. I'm also pretty damn good at math and science, and I was always determined to go to medschool. So here is my question: how safe is it to go into the art field financially. I'd really appreciate replies from some of the people who are doing artwork for a living.

Some of my work:

I know that it's impolite to ask about financial matter, but I'd really like to know.

Hmm... well looks like a bunch of people had the same question, and well I suppose I got my answer already... but I'd like to hear if anyone else has something to say.

I'd say go for what makes you happy. If your good in art and math, you might wanna check out architecture. My brother had the same problems off not knowing what to do, he spent 4 years trying to decide what he wanted to be. He is great in art, one of the best artists I've ever met but he was too worried about financial stuff so he studied to be a doctor, then dentist, then orthodontist, then vetrinarian, and Finnaly decided on architecture because he has fun with it and it's pretty finnancily safe by most standards.

I've been in your shoes, and I actually got a degree in architecture.

In general, I would definitely say do what makes you happy - if you love it enough and you are good enough at it, you can make a living at it. Doing something you only somewhat like, or don't really like at all, just for the money, is not really a good idea in the long run. In my opinion, it's worth the trade off to do something you genuinely love and make a comfortable living at it, than to spend your life doing something you don't care all that much about, just so you have a little more money in the bank.

I do have this to say about architecture: it is possible to make a good living at it, but you will probably not become extremely rich doing it, unless you are one of the lucky 0.05% - to do well in that field, you have to really love it a lot, probably even more than you love art; you also have to be very people oriented, and it definitely helps to have a lot of rich friends and acquaintances. It can be a tremendously rewarding career, but there is a lot to that field that is boring and not very glamorous.

Let me know if I can provide any more info on this subject.

Hmm. That's a tough question. But poor or thriving, I would offer this: if you work an eight-hour day and are awake for sixteen, then half of your waking life will be spent doing a job. You'd better do something you enjoy.

The rest of the answer is all personal, I guess.

.... I think you should just go for whatever you like better. Dream of art? Your an artist. Dream of pills and drugs? Your a doctor. Dream of naked people? Your both.

I'd say that the doctor is more financially stable and generally pays more than the artist. But, I'd recommend getting a doctorate degree first and then decide where you want to go from there. Also, you can be a part time doctor and part time artist. *shrug* It's all about which one you like better.

And... as for the art field... I'd say it's financially secure as well. You won't be going out of jobs etc. etc.

here's something interesting, In my art class right now, there are probably at least 5 people who have allready made a successful carrer out of being either a lawyer, doctor, whatever, and are now going back to school to study art again. thing is.... they allways have money for art supplies.... think about that

Boris Vallejo studied medicine but found out that art was his place. Begin with medical school and perhaps you will find your truth.
