Hi. I haven't been able to post much stuff lately because of the legalities tied to the projects that I am working on. This is something fairly new, I was asked by DC Comics to do a Prestige book, or a hardback 128 page graphic novel. All painted! This stoked me out. This page is early concept development of the main character in her garb. I am working out different iterations of her top, bottoms, belt, boots, etc. These are just a couple. This is the style I plan on executing the drawings with, then I will be doing a paint treatment atop the drawings. I have a couple ideas for that, but I still have to work them out till I find one I am comfortable with, and fast. Gotta meet the dreaded deadlines...

I will give more info on the story, and the title when I know I can. I just want to be sure I don't f**k things up, so I have to be mum for the time being with her. But, I can say that her belt is an important feature to her. I am going to go with the design, but beef up the details a bit more. The rest of her costume is still a bit blue sky.

Anyway, chew em up, like to hear some feedback, it'll give me a better direction for the final outfit.

wow she's so hot

I think too you should make her face a bit
thinner. that would make her really cute.

nice shading though (especially on the torso area)

Hmm.. would have to know what this is for to give any good ideas, but for now.. As far as the top I like the second one in the first pic better, but I would have the tips on the bottom claps come down a little longer. Leave them kinda loose though. I like the sketches. I'm not too big on her facial features. I think she would look better with slimmer features.

Looks good, Fred! The only suggestion I would have, is lessen her lips a little bit...She looks like she has collagen implants...My guess is she'd be alot sexier if she looked around 30 yrs old...She kind of has a baby-face right now, but it still looks good!

Awesome Fred! I can't wait to see how you paint these up! Are you going to be responsible for doing all the images inside and on the cover?
You're going to be one busy person if you have to do it all!
I know you can't say much, but I am curious if you going for the Alex Ross style of painting. It seems to be a very hot commodity and not very many people have the skills to pull it off. I think you could very well be the next big thing to hit the scene.

She is really appealing. Nice stomach.
I have to agree with the other guys, a little thinner face would make her much more attractive. I keep thinking of Jessica Alba. Lower lip seems a lil bit big, but thats a personal taste.
Nice top on the first drawing, that belt that goes across her chest is very cool. Aeon Flux had very creative outfits of similar type. Keep the button in between the breasts. Very cool right glove on the first drawing.

I forgot to say how awsome these drawings are!

Can't wait to see the book, whens the deadline?

Also just curious, whats the size of these drawings?

er... Fred, it looks cool (as usual), although at first I thought it was your interpretation on Sydney of Image Comics's Danger Girl. Sure Sydney's not the first long-black-haired chick dressed in leather clothes of her younger sister but since it is a popular comic-book, has the same (overall) drawing style and it is from the competition to DC... Well, you might consider the possibility that someone might get picky.

Of course, the chances that someone would unfarily (we know you, at least to this point) relate your chick to Sydney depends on what the comic is about too.

I guessed you would just want to ask DC for some issues of Danger Girl in case you did not know the comicbook.

Zoinks! Great as usual, Fred. I just registered for your figure drawing class that begins next month at Watts (hopefully it isn't full already) and I'll be stoked to just be in your presence. Can't wait to see your stuff in person.

As for comments, I like your fingerless glove treatment of her right hand on the top left image and the thigh-high boots rock, too. Gotta get my wife some of those...

Cheers!

This is she. The first one is her usual dress. Click to zoom in.

I dig the 60's hellcat vibe

I would have to agree.. her lips could be slimmed a little bit.. and I think then she'd be perfect. Love that tummy

Hey, Fred. I guess this is the one you were talking about before.

These are very, very nice. The first one is the one I like most. The poses are all photo reference, yes? At any rate, the thing that strikes me the most is the mouth. I guess she's African American, so her mouth's cylinder is poked out a bit more than average. But there's something about the bottom lip. I think it should recede much more. It just looks a little weird. Have you tried drawing her in full profile?

Again, these look great so far. Can't wait to see the painted version. I was also noticing, for the first time, how much of a Jack Davis quality your faces have Good luck. You rule.

This doesn't look like a Myst character... What? Maybe it's from the sequel, Myst 5: Another Hot Chick in Leather Pants, again played by Brad Dourif.

I can't wait to buy the DVD.

Thank you everyone for the comments so far...lets see:

BurnOut-I totally agree. Now that I have the images in front of me on screen, I am seeing them from a different point of view. I see these mistakes very clearly now. Gotta get back from the work and evaluate it later, not as I work on it...I am working on the slimmer look fer sure...

Moonlord,- same thing, she is gonna get a bit slimmer absolutely...

Drorak-thank you

Chapel-thanks very good advice, second one is my fav. pic too...

Visigoth-I am not sure how old she is supposed to be yet, and every time I draw comic book ladies, the comments from the editors are, these ladies look too old. I started the other way this time. With my luck, she will be a 30 year old lady, not a 20 something...And yes, the lips will come down a bit...thanks

Samdragon-yes, I am the cover and interior artist. I can say that Keith Geffin is writing it, I am looking forward to that. As for the style, I am playing around with a few. I will post them to see which one flies and which blow chunks...

Jenn-thank you. She is going on a diet as of tonight.

Plop-thank you. The belt and gloves I am polishing up right now. Hope to post something with the tighter versions of those soon. Each of these images is about 10 inches tall...and I have one year to finish...

Jorge-thank you for your comments. Any super chick in all leather is going to get grouped into a stereo type absolutely. This character is split personality, and is devoid of super powers. I still have some developing to do, thanks again...

Waldo-thank you. Gonna get my lady some of these boots too...yeah baby...

Flexible Elf-thank you. That was exactly what I was trying for.

Alias Moze-no reference. These are concept sketches, straight out the brain. But, when I do the pages, I probably will shoot some photos for lighting reference. She isn't supposed to be Afro-American, I just blew her lips out of proportion. Gotta get the implants out of those things. Thanks about the J. Davis comment. I love the way that guy does his types. He kicks ass. Thanks, I guess I should look at his work more, I don't see enough of it...

Thanks again everyone, I will post the newer versions soon and I am taking all these comments into consideration, and I will credit the forum in the book for sure. You guys are helping out whether you like it or not...heheh

dude you friggin rock. sounds like a sweet gig

i'd have to agree that slimming down her face, particularly her noise and mouth would make here more attractive, though probably less distinctive. kinda how i felt about mickes chick from a while back.
http://www.pixeljock.com/sijun/futz/micke.jpg
i actually felt that his initial drawing (1) was attractive and yet more intriguing then the number 2 which while still attractive was less unique. overall though i think he struck a good balance.

as far as her top goes i'd defiantly stay away from the collared one since its too reminiscent of vamperella (sp?). as far as the sternum strap, i think it depends on her hair. with long hair i think you should remove the strap because it will make the upper chest region just a little too cluttered (since it will already be occupied by overlapping regions of hair, neck, and shoulder). if you were to crop off her hair i think the sternum strap makes her cuter (more pack up in there). i'd bring the two lowest most points of her top together and down a bit so it looks more like a little chic sweater type thingy, straining against the pressure of her bosom. i personally feel it will conveys a more subtle sexuality as opposed to the bra look of the other ones. as plop said i'd keep the button.

lovely. i kinda sketched out what i mentioned above. hope you don't take offense. i think she's lost a bit of her uniqueness in the translation, but yippee, because of you i got to fabricate my dream girl (especially when i get ahold of ps6 and can add a little meat to her behind).

and the full sized one
http://www.pixeljock.com/sijun/futz/ouioui2big.jpg

this is a great piece of work. i'm constantly enthralled and appalled by the creativity on this forum. i can't seem to muster any myself so i'll just keep leeching off the rest of you guys and making myself feel important by nitpicking you work .

Beautifully rendered as usual Fred. Personally I don't like her face at all-sort of a Denise Richards look, which always makes me gag. A thinner face, less wide mouth, and less pudgy nose would do my heart good, but it's your character, don't listen to me! ^_^

Very, very nice! Can't wait to read it!

I really like the boots on the first sketch (I don't like those high boots) and I prefer the bra on the second one. These are my only "suggestions" for the clothes, well maybe a mini-skirt would look good too.

About the lips, I agree with what's been said, but the face on the last drawing looks great.

Now, this is probably off topic, but isn't Cliffhanger (Danger Girl company) owned by Jim Lee and Jim Lee's companies "owned" by DC? That would make Danger Girl a DC comic.

That's all, just keep posting them!

By the way, a co-worker of mine thinks she's got too much clothes on and that she should have more breasts LOL.

Wow Fred that sounds like a nice opertunity. you must be going insane with your work load atm

all has been said that i would have commented on so far (it looks like it's coming along very nicely). I was just after a bit of materials advice.
I've been working on grainy paper of late, either no.80 Bainbridge Illustration board, medium watercolour paper, or Kent paper. Now I'm after something smooth that can be used for watercolour with a lot of wet on wet (I tend to really lay it down), I was after a board as opposed to some paper so I don't have to stick it down and do all that messing around, but at the same time I'd like something without the texture and a lot of the Illustration boards I've seen have a very plastic surface.
Now should I just alter mt technique and not go so heavy on the water and use a paper (with all the pre soaking and taping down), or is there somehting that fits what I'm after.

Also what is your recomendation for smooth drawing paper that can take a fair amount of hard treatment. Sometimes I go for a nice and clean style but others I'll use a kneadble eraser as much as the pencil to push things back and foward and get some different textures happening. What are you using for these concepts?
I should really do my own reserach but I thougth I'd see if you had any suggestions. I'd also be interested in alternate working methods/materials if there's somehting that you think would be fun to try with pencil and paper (or whatever other kind of lead/graphite drawing implement you would recomend).

I'm happy doing things as they are but with the really grainy paper It's hard to get very detailed at small sizes, which means that most of my stuff is hard to scan.
which reminds me, how big are those sketches?
I was thinking something like comic paper. it has a very hard clean surface and can take a beating, but at the same time it's suprisingly absorbant and not plasic, (the blue line stuff anyway). Have you tried some of the very heavy comic papers? Maybe they would work for watercolour.

Hehe I'll quit talkin' now. Any suggestions at all would be nice.

Cheers

Hmmmm. Thinner lips and a slimmer look will be more attractive, yet be more stereotype also...your choice. Both approaches have their advantages and drawbacks. Are you going for originality or commercial success?

She reminds me of a naughty Eve from Dan Brereton's Nocturnals. Maybe she needs a bad@$$ tattoo or something?

Hey Ron...

Very nice indeed, I think having a slighty chubby face is rather nice.. not fat chubby but cute chubby if you know what I mean

I really want to get a copy of the novel when your done, but I dont know if it will come to Australia, or if it does I think I may be in for a long wait

You have a great understanding of art. You truely are a very fluent artist who is very sure of himself..

It looks like charcol , is it?... what medium is it exactly what what brands, styles and hardness did you use?

Good stuff.... We all highly respect you and your work.

And GOOD LUCK WITH IT
