Check this guy out;

This years issue of Spectrum is out;
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1887424547/qid=972303794/sr=1-2/002-5439813-2250424

This is pretty much a must-purchase if you're into scifi/fantasy art (and can afford the price tag). Once again it's an excellent compilation, although still no Spooge pics!

Spooge, you have to enter some images for next year!

There's a lot more digital entries this year as well (thats where I found the guy above).

Um, thats all.

Row.

Fantastic work!

But what is it about fantasy/sci fi artwork that makes them seem so... uninteresting? I'm hesitant to be critical of the stuff because I could never do it myself but I've always wondered why that sort of stuff sorta... (dum dum dum) looks the same?

When I observe it closely it's obvious the work is awesome but at a glance... they kind of remind me of covers of romance novels. But why? Is there a certain formula that people enjoy but I don't?

Just ranting a little here, hope I don't offend anyone .

Regards.

Sci-Fi illustrations can very easily come off as romance novels due to the dramatic figure poses, the emphasis on central figures, and saturated color schemes (not to mention hulking muscles, which is why the you could easily take the conan covers and slap them on a romance novel and they'd work perfectly, oddly enough .
V's conan work aside, I mean the old, old conan stuff.
However - I'd have to say that while Sci-fi can be bad, it can also be very, very good. Some of my very favorite work is in the category, and a lot more pleasing to me than classical work, landscapes, abstract work etc.

The new Spectrum! Can anyone confirm whether my former work buddy, Ryan Wood made it in? I only get to see him on Tuesdays when we go drawing and I completely forgot to ask about his Spectrum dealie...

Hopefully something other than the "canhead" piece?

thanks ahead,

Alan; Ryan Wood did make it in but it is only that Canhead image (great picture though). Does he have a web page with more stuff?

chumps;

I think you're right in what you say, although I would limit the types of images that look like romance novels mostly to fantasy book covers. They tend to have a lot of the same elements, and the book cover format is very similar between fantasy and romance. Scifi is usually different enough that it doesn't have quite the same feeling.

It's interesting that one of the good examples of digital art in Spectrum 7 was by Judy York, a well known romance book cover painter.

Dang. He needs more pictures for the world to know him by. Still cool, though! Thanks!

Ryan is one of those "slow to get on the internet" types. He's actually a very busy family man. I hope he can join the community on the internet some day so some of his fans can meet him. He seems a more appropriate visitor to these forums than I am and generally more talented...
