Hi there.

I was reading Jason Manley's posting on portraits and decided to try and put some of his advice into action. I started the pic today but I probably won't add much more to it as I think I made alot of mistakes with the proportions of various bits when I was starting the picture.

Jason:

quote:
VALUE IS FIRST..then temperature(warm or cool) and then intensity(brightness)

I think I know what you mean, however, don't these things go together (please, I'm a _real_ novice, I honestly don't know much about this kind of thing)? Could someone talk a little bit more about this.

The pic was done in Painter using a Fine Brush. I'm actually starting to like Painter quite a lot. That stylus problem is still a bit annoying but my thanks to the person who suggested just moving it away and back to to the tablet - it often solves it!

The reference was from an advert for Fraser menswear in a magazine.

nice start...

what I meant by value first then temp then intensity ...is that if your values are off then it doesn matter what color it is...that is all...

its easier to worry about value first...but yes it is best to do it all at once...

see my post again in regards to the image by Jeffrey Mims (the second link) ...you could use more color and temperature variation of similar values

any given area of value will have a spectrum of color based on the temperature of light and or shadow...even if the light is warm and the shadows are cool there will be warms in the shadows(not as warm as the warms in the lights but maybe as warm as the cools in the lights unless it is reflective light which can be warmer) and cools in the lights.....do you see what I mean? there is a color and temperature spectrum in light and shadow...look for it and you will see it...warms and cools in the lights and warms and cools in the shadows...it just depends on how warm the light is vs. the shadows ...regardelss there will be a spectrum...NOT JUST BROWN AND ORANGE AND WHITE...NO BANDAID FLESH...ICKY. PUT SOME OTHER SUBTLE COLORS IN THERE.

see his link as it is slightly exaggerated color and is easy to see what I mean...it can be done as subtle or as intense as you want.

was there a definition for what colour temp actually means around somewheres? (I think there was)
That term always throws me totally. (probably because 'cool' seems to be interchangable with 'blue' in the art lexicon and I've seen too many gas jets that disagree. But that use of 'cool' might not even come under the heading of 'colour temp'.)

Dominion: Thanks for the comments Dominion! I should have put more detail into the 'overbite' as you say. All he needs is the Soap Powder Salesmen twinkle on those teeth. Have you done any postings recently as I think this is the first time I've seen you on Sijun?

Meanwhile, in Sijun apathy week...

There are two contextual definitions of color temperature, and they have exactly opposite meanings.

In art circles, color temperature is derived from the color wheel. Red and orange are warm, Blue and Purple are cool, with greens going either way. As things approach gray, they become neutral.

In theatrical lighting, color temperature refers to the temperature of a specific metal or chemical. In this case, cool lights are orange-ish (like incandescents), and warm lights are more blue (like fluorescents).

I've almost never run across the latter definition in use, but I don't hang around many practical lighting technicians. If you're talking to an artist, chances are, he's using the color wheel definition of temperature, and not the scientific one.
