Although I'm no pro, I can give you some advice.
First, I would say stay AWAY from the doge and burn tools! Just use the paintbrush with a hard edged brush and paint your color variations from scratch. Looks MUCH better that way.
Also, I would recommend you don't start with an outline and fill it in. Just pic a base color and start drawing the basic shapes and colors of your image. Gradually increase the detail you paint in until it is perfect.

I did this pic today.... took about 1 - 2 hours... i think...
i might work some more on his body... i'm pretty happy with it...
his eyes is not good i think.... Looks strange...
and there is no bg...
someone have any id� for a bg???
i did some fire first, but when i was saving, it turned up an error saying that my memory was short.... doh....
well... please comment....
