wow that's a really good sculpture. You said you wanted it to be sad? Try working with his brow and mouth. like have the middle of the brow kind of arced up and his mouth in less of a smile. I think it looks great so far the only thing is the nostrils look a little square.

to make him look more sad, make him mouth smaller in width....and the brow could point upward towads the inside of the eye, and downward on the outer part....this may give it a more hungry pitiful look though....moderation and subtlety will be key. very nice work though. i love to sculpt! physical art is still the most gratifying DURING the process...i love the square nostrils too!!! hehe...i know...youre still working it. its great. looks like it has good scale too.. fun stuff. not take it to cybereffects or viewpoint and scan it and animate in maya!!! nice fun work....inspires me to bust out the wire and sculpey......._x

That's so nice. I really dig the whole gorilla thing. It's got a nice feel to it, but i wouldn't want it around me house or anything. kinda...creepy

GReat job on the Gorilla!

I did some quick tweaks to make him a bit more sad.

1. more wrinkles between the nose and the eyes and the brows, and around the eyes themselves.
2. much smaller mouth more closed and downturned.
3. eyes a bit turned in.
4. brow doesn't lift up.

Keep in mind I don't have any gorilla reference around, but what the heck he looks sadder to me...

I use Terra-Cotta clay.. it is the softest clay that they provide us... I have never done it before.. I am a Highschool student.. and will be doing 4 other sculptures as the year progresses.. so I will keep you posted..and I do need good criticism...

Thanks Again.

Thanks Optima, so I guess you can do pretty much any type of sculpting with this clay. Im interested in sculpting creatures, eg dinosaurs, fantasy stuff, etc to be used for scanning in and using as reference for 3D modeling. Thanks again. Anyone know of any good sites/books to learn abit more regarding this?

hey, maybe you could tell me what kind of materials and tools do I need to start modeling something like that ? Have you seen this: www.milesteves.com ? His sculptures are great reference for skin, wrinkles. He has one gorilla drawing too.

A sad gorilla never has it's mouth open.. that's the main problem in the sculpture.. liquid's version comes close, but it looks more like it's angry there.. just have it's mouth closed, downwards slight in the corners, and lift the eyebrows on the inner side a bit.. (i think this already got mentioned ..)
apart from that it's really great.. i love apes ..

(yes people.. this is NOT a monkey, it's an APE.. a monkey has a tail )

ps. can i have the sculpture afterwards

Hey Optima..
That's a great sculpture man, I really like it
I had a go at trying to make him look sadder, I hope this helps. Liquid made a great example on the one he did, this is just my take on it.

Nice job Kyri! It definitely works better with the brow raised like that. I tweaked the initial sketch, just hit 'refresh'..
