"I sux"?
um...hmmm...what else are you good at? I'm not trying to offend. But if you know that you suck at drawing, why aren't you doing what your good at?
I really hope this inspires a lot of comments, because I would love to hear some opinions.
There are thousands of people who decide they're going to draw, but it's not their area of greatest intellegence. I believe that artistic ability is something you're born with, then refine. If you don't have it, find something else your good at and don't waste your time, you'd only be hurting yourself. |

Isric, that's an interesting thought. I don't know if it's true or not, but it'd be interesting to try to teach someone with no artistic or creative mindset how to draw.....
I wonder if they'd pick it up?
Asmodie: Your pics are kinda hard to critique. As for your sketching ability, I think you just need to practice more. I know 'practice' encompasses a lot of things, but for now, just keep drawing, copying, whatever you do and you'll gradually see an improvement.

Isric exactly. Like that Gabe Whatever-His-Name-Is from Spooges thread. He's 19 and draws like ass. Dude, time for a new field.
Asmodie, they are pretty difficult to critique. I'd have to go with what Jason said. Draw as much as you can, Study life, take life drawing classes when/if you can. Just practice, pratice, practice. heh. I'm hardly out of my teen years (by 3 weeks, wahoo!) but thats the best advice there is.

asmodie: how old are you? I think that will help us determine what type of advice to give you.
Isric: I believe everyone is born with artistic ability. Its just that most people give up on the arts after the age 5. I think a driving force in wanting to be an artist is that "want". If you have the desire and passion to pursue the art field (or any field) then by all means pursue it. The only thing that limits you is yourself. sniff sniff.. I feel alot of love in this room and your negative energy is just disturbing it. (ok I wasn't serious about that last little part.) |

Hehe, no worries.
I think of it like this (comparing art to the violin):
-There are those who take up the violin, and suck, so they stop.
-There are those who take up the violin, and out of practice and determination play until they can't play no more. People generaly agree they are good. Nothing more said.
-Then there are those rare, briliant people who pick up a violin, and suddenly it sings. It's no longer violin music but a beautiful melody inspiring emotions and feelings you didn't even know you had.
I think of art the same way. There are those who practice and practise and practice, and sure, they're fine. But those who can TRULY make the work come alive are very rare.
Everyone is born with artistic ability, there are just those who are gifted far more strongly in that area.

So, basically what you are saying is if you are not one of those "rare" or "brilliant" people then you should quit. That sounds a little arrogant to me. |

I agree with Chapel. That does sound arrogant.

There are a few people out there who draw out of interest and love, Isric. Take that into consideration.
When Asmodie said "I sux" ... You shouldnt have taken it so literally and put the guy down the way you did.
Asmodie was only looking for some constructive crits... if you can help, then help.
And life is not so black and white. Not everything is "like playing a violin" |

Isric: Just out of curiosity when you first put Crayon to Construction paper did it "sing"?
Don't get me wrong, I love your work, it's beautiful, but, I'm willing to bet you're in the "practice and determintation" category. You know something? right now, you're good, but who's to say that with even more caffiene and elbow grease you won't be "inspiring emotions and feelings previously unknown"?
It might be a bit harder for you but a fantastic piece from you will mean more to you than a work of a similiar caliber of a "brilliant person" will mean to them.
I think my area of greatest intelligence would be golf. If I put a bit of effort into it I'd be trying to think up a nutty psedonym for a golf name on the PGA tour. Problem is, I hate sports. I mean that's one of the last things I'd like to be spending my time watching. I don't mind golf much, but I think persuing a carreer in something just because you like to ride around in tiny electric cars isn't the best motivation. I think I'd be a lot happier if I was to just go with what I like doing, conequences be damned.
of course.... when I'm 90 and have no savings and I'm living in a home I might start wishing I had a goofy pseudonym.

Isric-
Errr...Nope... still wrong IMO. Read "Drawing on the right side of the brain"
Those that appear to have natural talent are (IMHO) those whom have particular neural connections already set up. Be it by genetic inheritance or life experience. Those connections can be made at any time by any person. It can take years, a lifetime, never get around to happening, or can happen instantly.
I have no idea about Music. I'm not sure that they are comparable in this discussion. If youre taking a "Faith/Destiny" Sort of approach then fine. Go sit in the corner and leave it all up to whatever omnipotent being that is going to control weather we are good or not.
Im not as gambling man so I think its best to take matters into your own hands. There are techniques that train the right parts of the brain to allow you to draw. They have been tried and tested.
I think that there are definitely people who have natural talent. But to just take it on face value thats rather un-insightful. It does not mean that they will get good and it does not mean that others can not best them. Far more important to advancement are feedback and the attention that people get. Someone with natural talent is sometimes worse off than someone who has to fight every step of the way. False adoration can ruin the advance of skill. It dulls the senses, sitting on ones laurels if you will. These people dont understand that they are not all that good, and that there will always be someone better. Those who are used to the challenge never stop fighting. Theyre trying so hard that they dont even realise that theyve screamed past that naturally talented fellow whom thinks that all the hard work is done.
I understand what you are saying and Im not flaming, but it is absolutely useless to say such things. It helps no one and hinders many. This sort of comment can easily make a person give up. I know, for I have done so many times.
