I apologize if anyone is offended by this post.

This isnt specifically a DIGITAL art question, but it is art related.

I'm curious to know if any of you have ever tried drugs to enhance your creativity for drawing or painting (digitally or not).

I've often debated with my friends that stimulants arent necessary to create great art. But they often point out that many of my favorite artists ( musicians mainly ) often used drugs to enhance their ability.

I'm looking for first hand experience. Is anyone willing to tell me your stories about this? If possible I'd like to see work done both high and not. I'm not asking this for any other reason than to gain personal knowledge.

If you don't want talk about it publicly, please feel free to email me.

The best artist I've met, usually higher end animators, tend to be straighter-laced types who don't do drugs. If that means anything to you.

My take on this subject: Your imagination comes from your brain. Drugs kill parts of your brain. Hmm. Not hard to figure out. Don't do 'em.

There is a lot propaganda one either side of the drug use issue. I didn't really want to discuss whether it's a good idea or not. I want to see if it works or not.

I'm not planning on using drugs myself. That's why I'm asking for other people's experience.

Thanks for responding though, I appreciate that you took the time to do so. :)

When I create, I find that lighting up a crack rock or two helps me center my creative chi and really focus on the art.

I like to ride the horse too, if you know what I mean....

I may be wrong about this but didnt Salvador Dahli(Spelling?) do something that made him hallucennate in his dreams or something to and then he painted all of that weird stuff. For those of you who dont know salvador dahli was the guy who painted the painting with the melting clocks in a landscape. Pretty cool painting IMO.

It depends on the person, I make better work after having taken a St John's Wort (not the strongest of substances, but a drug by definition). It's just an anti-depressant and it relieves nervous tension. All it does is take away that slight feeling of being unsure of yourself that makes you unwilling to take risks in making pictures.

Art and music go hand in hand. If you want to make something whacked out, listen to music then paint. Don't think, just paint.
Thats what I do. Just put music on and sketch. I'm listenning to some Loreena McKennit right now. Personally I don't think drugs could enhance anything at all that could help you. Unless you into splatters and smears.

heh loreena meckenite is amazing, I was just recently introcuded to her music. yah music is definitely an awesome artistic influence,

wanna try something with an effect not quite as weird as drugs, but still strong? some people are affected by this more than others,
http://www.bwgen.com/
it supposedly changes your brainwave patterns, and it has actually helped me stay awake during many a study session and artistic binges.
I've tried it on friends and it seems to have a 60% success rate

Basicly if you take strong drugs (like LSD) you are unable to draw at all. You will be just blown out from real life for a specific amount of time. You can try to draw but after you return to the real life the scetch won't look as good as it was when you were drawing.

If you cant walk how can you draw? I agree with the splatter comment, that is going to be all your going to be able to do when your high on anything. Drugs screw up your cordination, thus making crappy pictures. Songs dont take cordination, just imagination which drugs seem to affect. You have to remember that part.

When I'm working, I'm not even drinking a beer during lunch ... messes me up.

When I'm making music, it's a little bit different, but well ...

Just a quick note: Dal never used drugs, just his weird imagination (and was really a STRANGE one, trust me).
