Anyway, you pic could be really nice if you go in with more extreme shading and highlights. It seems like you're using only slight variations of your midtone. Use dark darks and light lights. Make shines and shadows, but just don't overdo it. Give it some depth and focus. Too little will give your eye nowhere to focus on, and too much will make the whole thing too frantic and hard to look at.

HOLY CRAP! that's a big image!!! 1.2 megs and it's jpeg too!!!
ok, for future postings, please use higher jpeg compression, some of us have those old and primative 56.k modems and it took almost 10 minutes to download your image.
If you're not sure on how to save a good quality jpeg, let us know and someone will be glad to help you out.
If you want comments on your image, it's best if you keep your file size down, some of us don'thave the time to wait for a download
anyway, here is what you where asking for...
It's looks like you're studing Brom's work, It can be seen in the stiffness of the figure and the placement of the body as well as it's stance. You may want to start paying attention to the chest area, it's starting to turn pretty flat(value wise), and this early in the stage, that's not a good thing.
Try working from middle values out. Just because the face might be white in the final image, doesn't mean leave out color totally. When working on an image like this, composition is everything. Just having the person standing there isn't very attractive and doesn't leave much for the view think about. If you are looking at Brom's work, his works are very design/composition oriented. Look at the shapes he uses as repitition of the body. Look for how he causes tention with the use of aranging objects..I could go and on about Brom, but I'm not 100% sure that's who your looking at.
30% completed? I wouldn't worry about detail if your 30% completed, it will make your images very "tight" if you start adding detail at this point.
don't worry, I'm generally this long winded...
The main things to concentrate on right now are getting your values correct( i'm still working on this myself), stay away from the detail untill it's really ready for it, think about your composition and placement of the main figur before you start painting, just putting him in the center of the page with all that white can cause many problems with your colors. you will be very surprised when you start working with colored backgrounds and learn how colors work with each other in different values and hues.
Please, for your sake and our sanity, make your images at alower rez (72, not 150)
Keep at it, and show us how it goes. But concider some of the things I've said. Do what works best for you and most importantly do what allows you to learn the most. don't settle on one solution because you will be limiting yourself.

I agree with the previous post's comments. I think the main thing is that the image is flat and static without a feeling of depth. You have an arm shoting off at 90 degrees to the body and hair going at 180 degrees from this. next time try to show the character a bit more from one side. This will help to give you depth.
Below is a quick sketch (haven't done this in a while) of your character in the same pose. By turning it slightly, you start to get some curved lines which have the 3 dimensions to them (x,y,z labelled arrows). The character looks more alive and like they are about to do something. hope this helps.

Definately work on the pose. Have him doing something or making a pose of some kind and try to fit the whole body in the pic. A different angle would help, but the pose would be the more important change.

His position makes him look like he wants to dance. To bad he hasen't go the limbs for it.
I would just do another one in a realistic position
"ahem, mr. skeleton-greasy-hair? You may begin when ready"
(I added a lensflare to make his armour look all shiny like, hyuk!)

I liek the concept a lot, the character's features are great. Hmmm i would do sumthign with the pose though, i mean why would a skeleton warrior dude be like giving directions "Yeah thats right, keep on moving to the left.." Well umm yea

OK ok other than the pose and refining and stuff like that. What would be a cool back ground? An intersection with the lights all out and having cars following his directions? I was thinking of grace yard or maybe a firey back ground with silouets of chars (like war3 poster that come with D2). Any ways thanks for all the help, and how do i reduce the sizy of the pic so when i show it it isnt huge? thanks again for all the advice.
ps. Isric it isnt his hair, its just somekind of decor on the helmet.

ok, to reduce the size of your image...this is assuming you are using photoshop...
1. change the resolution of your image to 72 dpi, do this by going to the top menu and select IMAGE - IMAGE SIZE.
Once there make sure you do the following, make sure constrain proportions and resample image is turned on. This will shrink your image visually as well as dimentionaly.
Or, if you want to keep it at the same size but lower the rez, just turn off the RESAMPLE IMAGE box. (this will not decrease your file size though) This is the basic part of it, but it's enough to get your started.
2. OR! Go to FILE and select, save for web.
a new window will open up that gives you the option to view 2 or more images( 2up and 4up) click on the 2up tab. this will preview the changes you about to make.The original image is in the left and the changed is on the right. in the upper right of the screen select jpeg and stick with a setting of medium or high. Turn off progressive, turn on optimised. Look at the lower part of the window and you will see an estimate of what your file size will be once it is saved as well as when it is loaded (if you have that option turned on).
3. if you'r lost do this...
change you image to 72 dpi, but make sure it will fit in the screen with out taking up too much space when you resize it. SAVE AS jpeg with 45 to 50 percent compression.

I guess with whatever background you choose, it has to make sense with what the character is doing. At the moment one arm is shooting off the page. Why? What is he doing.
A graveyard would work alright considering the character but I think I dimmly light forest scene with a dominate fog and volumetric lighting coming from somewhere you also be just as effective.

matt elder: the arm is cut off, but in the original sketch there was more room, but after scaning it the pic was cut down so the arm is right near the side. anyways thx for the response everyone. Im still woring on this pic in my spair time and its looking better. I'm not trying to make fun of the pose it is just that if it looks like it is moving or has depth, then the image is much more inviting. Look at Isric's second one. It is relatively simple yet there is a great deal of movement there and it looks like you have this really weird character dancing. It is quite inviting and intriging. Don't think that I'm ripping the image apart, just trying to be help and offer some good crits.
