Hello all. I've been checking out this palce for the past couple days, and I think it is quite impressive. You all are so knowledgable.

Anyways, I'm generally a 3d animator/texturer/modeller, but I have always enjoyed drawing. I can never actually produce a finished clean good-looking image though. So I figured, I might as well learn from you guys.

Anyways, I've seen all these gladiator pics on the forum recently, so I just decided to make one myself today. I made it in about 2 to 3 hours. Although it still isn't done, I would like all your opinions/suggestions and any other comments you have on it.

Personally, I think the colors are a little bland, I need to do some actual work on the face and hands, and redo the armor.

Good work on the texture on that thing on his shoulders! Actually there is little wrong with the body-parts considered apart from each other.

But: watch the proportions!

isn't the head way to small for the chest? and aren't the hips too small too? Or is the chest just too big?

More on the head: the mouth is a bit low, the eyes should be halfway the face (vertically - see?)

The under-arms are too short, the hands are too short (or is he making fists? - if so, try to make that more clear)
Or are they too wide?

I hope I helped you a little. Good luck on it

Hi and welcome,

Seems like you do alot of smudging when you paint, I would advice you to have restraint and not use it too much, to skip it period, at least in theory.

Try to catch the biggest and most important values first. Seems like you have been working more on getting the details right than the values. If you look at an image, say a photo of a subject, zoom out that photo, what will dissappear first? the details. The things that will dissappear first are less interesting than things that will not dissappear. thats the hirearchy stages of what to start to render in an image if you want to go somewhat towards realism.

I think that image can get really nice if you let loose a bit and forget the details, at least in the beginning.
