Hi,
I'm looking for ideas on how to improve this image, any help is greatly appreciated. The idea behind the picture is that sometime in the future, robotic babies maybe be born and nurtured alongside human ones.

I like the layout, lighting and idea behind the pic. Only downside is that I wasn't able to 'get' that it was supposed to be a robot baby. Maybe you could make it a bit more 'sorayamish' [sp?] in terms of design to distinguish it from the other baby 'model'.

Then again, that's just my opinion...

Why not just build an adult robot? That's much more efficient. And how would a baby robot grow into an adult robot? How would the baby robot grow if they're a machine? How would a machine made of metal be born in a womb? I'm not heavily criticizing your pic -- just the idea behind it. How would it be implimented?

BTW, have you ever seen The Matrix or The Terminator? Never let the machines gain control. Aside from the above -- cool pic. It's nice to see an original idea every now and then.

Hey Liquid!, thanks for your opinion and the quick reply. I'm not sure what the word 'sorayamish' means? Is he an artist?

EDIT: Don't worry I found out a little about his work.

Harnish, hehe imagine 100 years ago people saying "Robots? But how would they move by themselves?" Could a robot not be continuously rebuilding itself with tiny nanotech like machines? Could a "mother" robot not develope a little factory inside herself that builds the beginnings of another robot?

it could but why would it?
why not just build a full size one from the start?

heheh ... it does portray an interesting message nevertheless ..

Looks really good.

The material at the bottom of the cribs looks perhaps a little stiff; maybe try to make the babies sink into it a bit.

Hajime Soriyama. Really awesome stuff. I wouldn't go for the chrome airbrush look, rather try to look at how he takes organic things (like a shark) and translates it into a chrome 'machine'. Thus adding, screws, hinges, plates, etc.. might be useful to re-emphasize that this is supposed to be robotic.

Just an idea...

My wishlist for this pic (if this were mine own)

- depressions in the crib cushions
- "yo yo cool phat real" fabric textures
- details galore including:
= charts and papers and stuff hanging on the outside of the cribs
= a slight differentiation between a robotic crib and a human crib. For instance, does a robot really need a comfy mattress but really needs a wire hooked up to it for monitoring or energy....?
= a human or robotic nurse in the background... off to the side perhaps?

- Liquid's idea of a "Sorayaman" Robot baby face model is good. If you know UV and bump-mapping, the model doesn't have to be too complex to construct (stretch, squish and pinch the human baby face a bit). Keep the face human in contour though, as that seems to be an important part of the scene's message Don't go doing Sorayamas' metal wings/antennae-as-ears thing!

Lighting and setting look good. Keep that the same or similar.

Yep, I've just about incorperated most of those things in already, I'm not sure if I have time to do a robotic nurse. I was originaly planning to do a coupla robot parents at the window but I don't have the time, I gotta do other work.

I've updated the pic at my site, the shadows are a blodge job at the moment until i can render another shadow pass but the shadows rendered from the area light are really nice. Liquid directing me to soyaramans work really helped me out with the look of the robot. I will find time to put a few extra details like u suggested charts and stuff... Thanks for your help.

The big mother robot (factory) would build small robots to begin with because big ones require much more materials, so the momma just builds small robots and uploads the complete AI in their storage devices, implementing a heavy urge to find scrap metal and augment it to their bodies to become bigger and when a certain size is acheved, the reproductive section in the AI kicks in and the big robots start manufacturing more small robots.

Life. Just different.
