Hi there.
I want to start using Painter as I got Painter 5.5 on the front of a magazine a while ago.
1) I can't seems to get any precise control using Painter on any of the tools. Okay, so a realistic paintbrush isn't going to give pixel-perfect results, but reducing the size of paintbrushes just doesn't seem to work.
2) Every time I change a brush or use 'Build Brush' it screws my WACOM settings up and I have to re-calibrate the tablet. It really annoys me when this happens.
3) Could you guys give exact details about which brush settings you use, what kind of diameter brushes you use and any other useful settings?
4) Maybe I'm just trying to use Painter like Photoshop.
Any help for a beginner in Painter appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by percise control. Do mean making straight and hard edges lines, or do mean the redraw of the brush strokes as you draw them?
It's been a while since I last used 5.5, but I'm sure it has the brush control pallet. use that for setting your bristle type, softness hardness etc. i can't give you exact details as i'm using version 6. And they are somewhat different in some settings.
maybe Veb can help you out if gets time to come in here.
Not sure why it's screwing with your tablet, have you downloaded the recient drivers for it? Are you using the brush tracking in the prefs? You have to use that each time painter starts, it doesn't remember your personal setting for brush tracking.
Depending on your processor and memory, some brushes will be very slow and may even jump around while you draw with them. Does painter 5.5 have an option for "feature?" in the brush controls? If so, try playing around with that it makes your brush "hairy-er) and this will speed up your redraw times as you draw the stroke also.
If you're wanting nice smooth strokes with out the feathered bristle look, try using the pens and markers and setting them up to your personal preference. If you screw up a brush, don't worry, you can always click on on restore default variant to return it to it's original state. You can also use the water color brushes for this effect, and turn off the wet function.
Hope i'm not confusing you
