Anthony: sorry for not reaching the skill that you must have done to have such a large ego. I never said I was a kick arse artist so why do you exspect it from me?. I'm still a learner and who said this is finished? Anyway thank you Tinusch for speaking more constructivly I probably wont spend much more time on this as it's just a sketchy thing... like spare time sorta piccy. I just liked it so I thought I'd show you guys it. |

Well, Dont let one bad comment stop the flow of pics! It's always nice to see a new person trying out there creative talents and asking for help to improve. That's what it's all about.
I like the *almost* anime style, DBZ comes to mind!
BTW: I've seem many pics on this forum of far worse stuff! :P

Cleaner, but don't be afraid to use harsher tones...go lighter/darker.
Recommend doing a b/w picture or image like this in a couple of tones that are at *opposite* ends of the scale and work in from there. And then go the whole hog so to speak for an overall tonal range..get my drift?
Ahh shit, I'm useless at explaining, someone please eloborate for me....... |

Jaffa,
I think what you're after is how to pick appropriate values in your pics. If you search the forum, Fred Flickstones has an excellent class in which he explains this process quite clearly. Highly recommended.
I think it's often useful to have a background. The reason is that characters, in an illustration, animation, or whathaveyou, are almost always against a background of some sort. And the backgrounds value will affect the values in the character.
Specifically, the values in the "light" side of your character hovers in the middle range of values, too non-commital, too muddy. You need much more range. Go darker on the parts of the surface that are away from the light and light when they facing the light. Try to avoid the middle values of 50% and such. Make sure you put some thought into the painting regarding where the light is and how it affects your subject. Again, Fred's tut will shed lots of "light" on the subject (no pun intented). |

Hidey ho,
haven't posted anything in a little while, been busy with other things. Today I got down to my paintbrush and the following just came out. "Use more variation in shades! kept going through my head while I was painting and so I used about 5 different shades instead of 2 and it looks far better than my other stuff. Took about 40mins to get to the stage that it's at right now. I'm working in a 1024 768 space and I zoom out once then paint. So it looks alot better when zoomed out once (well this version is resized 640 width for the board... so it should look ok) I am really looking forward to a geforce or summin so that I can work in higher resolutions, zoom out once when painting then when finished, resize it to a smaller resolution... that would really help me. I'm also starting to see the big problems in using a mouse. I cant get very strait lines or slow curvs without loads of lil anoying dips. I'll probably work in this a bit more but not much. as for my landscape picture. I tried using smaller and hard brushes and such but I just got bored and sick of it after a while. So, no new version of that sadly. Anyway check out what I've just done. He's called Davin, he is in his late 30's, he is a midgit and just cos he's blue, DONT MEAN YOU HAVE TO SHOUT RACIST COMMENTS AT HIM! (j/k)
Ps. I'm already seeing massive improvements in my piccys and I'm really enjoying it. I'm very greatful for all your comments, pictures and wiseness ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

man how long did that take, like 2 minutes?
Spend more time on the work, and you'll see better results.

Well, what my tactless friend Anthony meant to say was that if you put more and more work into the pic, just keep adding to it and keep refining and going in with smaller and smaller brushes, adding more details, it'll look exponentially better. But it's looking pretty nice so far. |
