Hi, gang!
Thought I'd try a slightly different approach to characters and try out this type of character. I know it's Japanese-ish, but I don't think it's SD. Anyone know what this style's called?
About the pic: Just a quick guy I whipped up. His name's "Tank". He's a mechanical tinkerer. Works on big machines like airships and stuff. Sorry bout the quick coloring job... I'm going to do a better one and a new drawing in this style if I get good feedback *hopes and prays*
Comments, crits? Thanks in advance!

Jenn: sure! I don't mind at all. Thanks for asking first
However, the "original" is some ridiculously huge PS file. I can send you a black and white lineart version without the colors if you like? You could PS that up in your own style...?
If you know of an easier way, lemme know

Awesome stuff. I'm not sure what the style is called but it totally reminds me of characters in FF7. Cloud in particular, only with a big guy and not a big sword.
I think this is a cool way to design characters, and makes me wanna do the same thing.
Cool idea.
You could create a nice series of guys doing that!
Later.

cool pic-tor. Needs work though. I would call it more cartoonish rather than anythign else. Doesn't look manga to me, except maybe for the hair |

It looked a little flat, so I added some shading to the face, mainly under the eyes and round the nose and under the cheeks. You did such a great job shading elsewhere on his body, especially the clothing folds on the knees, so I just emulated the supposed light source on his mug.
I also fixed up the chest a bit. Well, fixed it unless he has a biomechanically augmented chest that is. Drew his pectorals stretching from his arms and kept them from meeting in the center to create the illusion of subtle body contouring. Also added some neck line detail. Yay!
Then, to jazz it all up, I used the color blue and the paintbrush tool on a "Lighten" layer in Photoshop. I erased all the blue by hand which covered black lines.
Great pic by you It looks like a cross between Chrono from Chrono Trigger, that boy from Digimon and Brock from Pokemon (the eyes :P) |

The style? Well, to me this obviously is manga-style. You know, "manga" just means "comics" in japanese, but the shading, hair, mouth, proportions are very manga-esque IMO. But that ain't so bad, is it?
One thing tho: imagine taking off the shoulder pads and you'll find the arms are not attached to the torso. See? Too far off IMO. |

Thanks for the positive comments!
billyjay: thanks, man. I'm planning on creating a whole world with characters and creatures like this pic. Tank's just the first guy, so kind of a prototype as well.
Kuzya: hehe, he's definitely gotta be a guy. I understand about being kinda girlie-ish, but that's this type of style, I think. Everyone has a really slight, thin build except for muscle-men. I'm planning on creating some girls in this style, too.
Jenn: see below for the full-size, lineart version of the pic!
Superbug: Wow, kig wasn't kidding about the UV radiation. Not sure about the blue highlights (seems like an unnatural color?), but I do like what you did with the torso lines and the shadows. I'll redo that with your ideas in mind. Thanks for pointing that out! I know better than that when it comes to pec muscles and stuff, so I dunno why I didn't draw it correctly! (PS, Brock rules!! I thought the same thing after I finished his face)
Jaymo: AAARGH! I know!!! I drew the shoulder pads first, then drew the arms, so I didn't think about that until it was too late and I had inked the pic. Sucks. Ahh well. Thanks for the heads-up on that, though. I'll make sure to fix that in future drawings!
Anyway, here's the link to the full-size, lineart version (about 140k).

Not only Jenn, but anyone else can play around with the colors to their heart's content as long as my sig stays in the pic. Remember, I'm planning on creating a whole series of these guys, so he's an important character!
Thanks! Have fun If anyone else has any more comments or crits, please post em... I want to make sure I nail this style before creating new characters!
Thanks again!

The first 5 ones are seperated by minutes, so they might be the result of a bug in the sijun.com UBB code..
But the SIXTH repost is dated 5 days later, meaning the poster really DID do it on purpose. So the dipshit adjective is applicable still. |
