I learned how to create 3d from curves last week at work, and this is my first attempt to do a model with it that i did the other night. Whatcha think? Curves are fun....up to this point i've been modeling from primitives and cutting faces and all that. But with curves is a lot easier to do organic shapes faster.
I had some trouble around certain areas trying to get the surface to do what i wanted....

Hi Dhabih! It looks nice! What program do use use for modeling? Did you model this with NURBS or NURMS.. or which curves do you mean? I know that some points and areas of the face are quite hard to model. Hmm... I think that it looks a bit narrowed. I could be better if had a bit wider. I suppose you did another side of the face at first and then copied it.. right? Face modeling is quite difficult at first times because you have to get right dimensions. Keep working man! Modeling is also good training to drawing and painting.

Hey cool!! I wish I could model faces like that... (Ive given up now, but a while back when I really tried, my lame heads always came out looking like a fridge or something. huuuh) ^_^

That is awesome! I didn't know your were experimenting with 3D. What program did you use to creat that face? I can see the Dhabih style in it, really hard to bring a 2d style into 3d.

That's some nice modelling there. I likes the protruding chin and hollow cheeks the best.
Yeah, what program did you use: Maya, Softimage, Rhino, Max? It looks like multiple cross-section lathing, but then again, that's the only method I know of to make a face of that caliber (I still have to get past the tutorial :P)
Even if it is lathed, I see you've done some heavy tweaking afterwards.. well, heavy for a first-time work. You don't get all those pinched areas and wrinkles for free. |

cool head. it sounds like you're using surface tools, which are really just patches. it's a pretty popular way to model, but i hate it. some parts of the model where the splines intersect just dont want to become smooth, so you have to apply a relax modifier, but that can change the shape of the whole model. nurms are great, especially for organic modeling. it's just low-poly mesh editing with subdivided surfaces. make a box, apply the edit mesh modifier, apply the meshsmooth modifier over the edit mesh, then drop back down and work with the model in edit mesh mode. you give verticies different weights as well. |

Dhabih:
Oh! I guessed that you used 3DSMAXr3 but I didn't suggest it. Because the surface looks like made by MAX.
Okay. Hmm.. maybe you get the idea and difference from the words which are behind the abbrevations. The NURBS consist of the words "Non Uniform Rational B-Splines" which have improved with items such as "Fillet surface,Surface edge curve", etc.. things like that. And the NURMS means "Non-Uniformally Rational MeshSmooth".. it's the feature that gives a very organic look to models. Nice things.
I give a tip: If you want to play with things like the NURBS you could use the Rhino program, for instance. It's good enough for organic modeling and things like heads, hands, etc.. try it. There are also few plug-ins available which are useful tools for organic stuff modeling. The one of these is Surface Tools -plug-in from Metacreation (http://www.metacreation.com). Do you already know it? It's absolutely great one! Umm.. it could be long story to explain all here.. hehe. Keep going with this stuff man!

Thanks for the feedback!
I used 3d Studio MAX release 3.1, using the spline curve tool and then applying a surface over it. I pretty much drew in the contours and then connected them together to form the shape. I think these are nurbs and not nurms....since i dont know what nurms are..
Wanna learn animation next
