I tried something different today. This was painted using only the lasso tool and a couple of different underlays. Normally I just use the default brushes with opacity and noodle it until I get tired of the piece. This is the first time I've tried something like this. Thoughts?

By the way, it's supposed to be Batman in case that wasn't obvious.

Looks good to me, I didn't pick it for Batman sorry. But all I could think when I saw it was how sculptural it looked. I like the tones too.

Looks cool Francis. Although I thought it was just weird line work instead of Batman. I think with a character who is drawn so many different ways it is hard to capture the look with close-ups. Also, since you've used purple instead of a blue which would relate more to Batman.

I like it If you don't mind me saying so...It looks as though it was inspired by some of Spooge's work. Painting over an underlying texture/painting and the sharp divisions are very reminiscent(sp?) of Spooge's Batman's face is well done as well. I think it would have a stronger effect
if there was some variation in colour in the skin tones and mask--other than purple...but that's just IMHO.

very cool. its actually one of the more watercolorish pictures i've seen done in photoshop.

sorry but didn't catch the batman vibe. i've 'spirmented a bit with apply filters and such on the channel layers and got some pretty interesting effects, but lacking your skills the end result was simply interesting. did you preplan much or did you just wing it.

That's very good, I really like the style. I think it could be more obvious as batman if you included the head portion, all it looks like now is just a really nicely drawn face. Awesome work.

He looks very grim, I really like the effect you have given it. Would you go into more detail on how you did it please?

Francis - I think it looks awesome! Nice work on trying something a bit different. I always like to see different approaches to things and I really like where this went. Very moody and almost rainy looking...

no way, that's the midnighter from authority :P

so, what did you do once you selected your area? you painted with medium opacity? so the new thing here was you were using the lasso tool to restrict your areas and having that area at the same level?

the reason i'm asking is i don't see how it was used in the picture cos there are so many levels! that would have been easier to do with freehand brushing?? unless all of the line art (all the "ink work") in there was done using the lasso also, and all of the different shades too! if so, you've used the technique in a more detailed (higher granularity) that i would expect it used, eg in comic style colouring - there would only be about 3 different levels per area at average. more power to you

really nice, it made me run thru 3 impressions in a matter of a second (i still have to understand if it's fascinating or confusing ).
at first i thought it was weirdly sculpted facial traits (maybe a flash while the first half of the JPG loaded i really don't know it's been a sudden thing) then i realized it was a mask and was dubious if it was wolverine or batman. at the end of it (before readin the 2nd post under it) i concluded it was batman (wolverine would have had more unshaved beard ).

all in all i find it lovely, too much of that kind of style on the long run could be boring or tire, but once in a while it just kicks asses.

Ha, I guess I shouldn't have mentioned Batman at all, and just let people interpret it as they saw it.

Dino, it definitely was inspired by Spooge's techniques, in particular, those arthur pics from a while ago.

Phreaknasty, I just wung it.

Fred, it's wolverine wearing Bruce's mask. It's an exchange program thing between the X-Men and the JLA.

Cos and April - i used the lasso tool to select shapes for highlights and shadows, and then painted in the selections with a variable opacity brush. The idea behind using the lasso was just to avoid having the very stereotypical photoshop brush shapes in the painting. Before painting the face, I created the random diagonal shapes the same way, with the lasso. The face was painted on a layer on top of that, so that I could use the opacity to reveal some of the patterns underneath. Oh, and in addition to the diagonal shapes, I added two texture layers - wrinkled paper and hamburger, both of which are standard texture maps included with 3DStudio Max 3.1.

Thanks for the comments - wouldn't mind seeing other people's work here too!

Nice work Francis.
A bold, strong piece. I like the tones you've used and the sharp outlines, it looks a little like Simon Bisley's line work.

Very cool!!
I like the sharpness of it. Looks almost like
watercolour to me. How about blue instead?
It could add more batman feeling to it.

Micke.

Nice one Francis.. looks like watercolour and colourpencils/crayons..

this method is but a step away from alpha masks which I use regularly.. Esp. handy when doing edge work...

This is nice man, i realized it was batman at the first glimpse! man, i can totally dig it. The color scheme defines the character and gives us a great feel and mood to the pic. I would suggest to round off or change the direction the chin is at, it looks awkward. Nice pic man!!!

Really nice! And, yeah, he IS Batman.
It slightly reminds me of Jae Lee's inks.
