Ok well i know this is yet an other school question .. and i didnt post it in the school thread because welll it was a question about american schools.... So i was wondering what are the list of possible schools for digital art and 3d as well as traditional IN ONTARIO alone??? I have looked into Sheridan college and am very interested ... BUt i live in Ottawa and was wondering if there are any closer schools or others then sheridan... Yes i did look over the net but had no luck... so maybe i thought some other artists would know or have made a research or have been to an ontario school...

thanx alot would be very great full if some people can post... im having a hard time to decided if i should go to college next year or not ... and stuff like that....

I know OCAD and U of T used to have a joint program for CG and Multimedia back when I was there (sponsored by Alias, i believe) Don't know whether that's still around, but OCAD is still one of the best art schools in Canada. You'll make a lot more career contacts in TO, Montreal or Vancouver anyway, worth getting your ass out of Ottawa for school. If not, check into Carleton, they used to have a pretty good Industrial Design program, I don't know about CG. With all the digital spfx companies in Montreal, I'm sure there's got to be some good programs there, I just don't know which school has 'em. Try calling around UQAM and McGill, see what's around, or call some of the effects companies like CORE Digital Pictures in Toronto ( http://coredp.com/ )and see where they hire from.

Im not too sure, but if you come to where I live, University of Waterloo might have an OK arts program, considering they send out the most people to Microsoft in the world, and people from Disney hire students also. Wilfrid Laurier university wont have anythin cuz they're more business. Its weird, the 2 universities are a 3 minute walk from eachother... and i live 5 minutes away from them. And I think Conestoga college might have something too, not toooooooo sure on that one... this is all a guess cuz im still trying to decide if i wanna go to calif for collge or not.

Guys i know that im prolly younger than you but i do have to tell you something... i would suggest NOT going to the states for college ... I think canada has a much better background in 3d and digital art.. hey the US movie industry came here to canada... specifically quebec for the movie jurasic parc... seriouslly try going to sheridan college or some universities in quebec before going to L.A and spend a bunch of dough when you can prolly get a better education here for less money... No offense im sure there are alot of good schools in the US ... pls i dont want to see any post threatning me what so ever... my topic does specifically say ontario only .. but i dont mind if you want to answer my school question if your from the us or anywhere else....

Well, I personally recommend Sheridan. They have incredible illustration program, in addition to their award-winning animation/3d program. In fact, I am one of the proud Sheridan allumni (Class of 98 baby!). I could probably give you the phone numbers to some of my old profs that could get you more information on whatever course you're interested in.

But, if Sheridan is too far away.. I also suggest York University. They have an incredible design program, and their fine arts program is top knotch. In addition, the local college (Durham College) in my city has a GREAT design program. They haven't gotten much recognition yet, but you'll see

... uhh.. I'm rambling, I'll shaddup now.

I would suggest not applying to any course at sheridan other than their art fundamentals course.

the thing is this - their animation program is probably one of the best in north america, and is the one where all the folks who are pretty much pro go to and learn animation.. same (almost) with illustration.

if you're really amazing, then get your portfolio in and make sure it's ROCK solid..

otherwise, your grade 12 marks'd better be goood.

good luck!

You really recommend Sheridan? I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price. It's actually cheap. Which is a good thing.

I know that. That's why I said it was cheap. Which, I repeat , is a very good thing. But I personally am most interested in the Illustration course there.

huamnclay : what program did you graduate from sheridan from? i there right now actually, just taking the fundimentals program but hoping on getting into trad. anim or illustration

as fo rthe york design program, they have now merged it with the graff. design program at sheridan. pretty hard to get into, but you graduate with a BA and a college degree.

How come it's so expensive for International students to attend Sheridan, it's like 4 times more expensive.

I graduated from the illustration program.

And yup, I know that York and Sheridan have integrated their programs. Actually, my girlfriend is a design major at York, thus integrating her studies with Sheridan. She loves it too.

Sheridan is king!*($(* :P

svanur that's how it works... i mean well lets say if i decide to go to British columbi for school well even tho i live in canada it would cost the extra taxes for converting and stuff... im not sure as to why it is 4 times as expensive but i know you have to pay taxes because you aint from around here hehe...

WEll guys i think i will try out for the traditionnal animation degree than step into 3d animation... But im not REALLY sure if i should do that or take the illustration course... Humany clay id like to hear more of your experiences from sheridan and how you go in and stuff .. hehe thanx alot..;

Hey Guys,

I'm also in Ottawa. I don't really draw myself, but I've known people who are quite good, so I have a bit of background to work from.

It's pretty much common knowledge that Sheridan is a good choice if you're serious. If you stick it out, chances are you'll be offered a job on graduation. Algonquin (sp?) College right here in town also has some art courses. My friend wasn't particularly thrilled with the course since they were heavily computer based (hey, DPaint beat flip books in my opinion) and he preferred actual paper. See as how you're in this forum you probably won't mind quite as much. I don't know how well liked the graduates in Algonquin's program are either. You might be able to sneak yourself into a class to two as well, to see what it's like there before signing over your life savings.

Wigin: Mostly I just drink beer, smoke cigarettes, read, and play guitar... All in Ottawa! Actually, I do software (mostly boring as hell Cable Modem code) at a place called Cadence Design Systems, out near the Ikea.

Software is a "digital art" right? :-)

i guess so if you twice to words kinda.... ok well i just figured out that my futur as an artist is going down the drain and that i am going slowly PSYCHO........ ah oh my god... I really dont know what to do .. huh .. Every art school i look for in ontario requires VERY specific portfolio's and i dont have half of what they want in mine... Man these colleges are very picky... Man i am seriously gonna CRY lol... maybe i should be brave and decide NOT to go to school at all and get out in this art industry and show what im made of... anyways i have less than i a year to get up to date and do AS much as i can... oh man ... im completly depressed ... i kinda feel like NEVER drawing ever again and go into garbage disposal business or as far away fomr visual arts...

Right now, I take graphic design at Algonquin in Ottawa which is a well-known school in canada, because it offers one of the best programs for design. Also, their animation program is really really good, I saw their booth, and watched their demos at the Ottawa 00 Animation Festival, and I was seriously impressed. Also, Algonquin doesn't require an OAC graduate, as OCAD does, even though I always hear of the blatent disorganization that OCAD has to offer, which isn't a good thing. So yeah, go apply to Algonquin, and Sheridan if animation is what you're looking for. If you want design, check out Algonquin or George Brown in Toronto.
