I just put the finishing touches on this. I was going for a sort of over the top pirate scene. I wanted the main characters posing with all kinds of pirate elements around them, I maybe should of made them more dynamic. Took me about 3 days of on and off work.
If anyone has any comments or suggestions let me know.
And here's a high-res version http://home1.gte.net/capnpyro/pirate_huge.jpg
And uh.. sorry for it not being digital art per se. Maybe Ill color it.

That's pretty kewl! It's got details on the ground. Mebe you should do more on the top half of the drawing (on that tower maybe?).
And a pirate wouldn't carry a sword like that... it's not like he's gonna use it.. the way he's holding it is just.. not too natural. Try changing that. I think the rest is great. |

I think his hands should be bigger... he looks like a girly-hand man!
and there is something wrong with the face of the girl, but im sure colouring will fix it, it looks like her face is painted on, but its a nice face ;D
Michael Turner inspired?

Couldn't resist to post my pirate pic :
Other than that, good job. I like your image. My only critics would be that the tower llooks a little too modern and too clean, and that you have to much space on the right: your characters are a little lost in the middle. Great job anyway. You should ink it, or/and put some color on it.

trance- thanks, yah.. the tower. I dont have any reference for it right now.. so I sort of blocked it in. I plan on making this a portfolio piece so Im definetely going to go back and finish it up once i find some reference for it. And that swords a cutlass, damnit! It's piratey.
darkmoon- yah, this was inspired by a drawing turner did for a game called Vagrant Story. my style is turnerish I suppose... I hope not that much, campbell and silvestri are also really big influences. I'd like to think i have enough my own style though
dude- hah, dont mind the lense flare on mine either, I hand drew mine in. Pesky land lubbers and all that
black_fish hah, we should make this the official pirate thread! yah, i mentioned the tower thing earlier. Id like to color it if i get alot of spare time, Im still really slow Inking it Id just ruin it heh
Thanks for the comments yall

Hey CapnPyro.
I think you need to work on your anatomy a bit more. Don't source from comics. Most of the heads I've seen on the women you draw are too big. have a look at some photos and you'll see what I mean. As I see it now you are inheriting a lot of bad anatomical errors from comics. It's really hard to learn from comics. You can look at them and see how particular artists have broken down the complex human forms into stylised lines but without the base knowlage you will not fully understand what's going on. The thing is that when you learn from comics you don't learn all that much.
your pic looks pretty good exept for a few anatomical errors that are common to comics. The people who originated those styles had a grasp of the unstylised human figure and were able to create their own interpretation. if this knowlage is absent you can only hope to become a very good copy of a very good artist.
Hope I'm not coming off as a dick. I can see that you can draw well but to my eye it's not coming together. I'd imagine that with your skill level apparant in the rest of the drawing you should have no trouble working out the few proportion and anatomic problems That I can see.
If you choose to ignore this and then fine, but I think if you at least made your female heads a little smaller a few of your pics would trancend from pretty good to almost pro quality. There are just a few thigs that are dragging good drawing down.

Rinaldo: Because you read my mind I have nothing to add. Highly agreed.
CapnPyro: Nice stuff even though there are those few bugs. Keep up your good work.
