I think it looks a lot like fire. It looks like fire hair. If you turn this upside down it almost looks like real flaims going up,
I think this is a great attempt at painting fire. Are you painting with acrylics or what?
Good work!

I think you've got the right idea there surferboi. It's main problems are the downward direction, and the setting. Fire generally lightens what is behind it, so would never look this visible or dark on a white background. I think it would probably look quite good in a black or dark scene.
Please excuse the incredibly crap brushwork, but I've tried to quickly put the fire together with your figure. I darkened off the background to help make the fire seem luminous, and quickly splashed some firelight over her features. You'll also notice I gave the fire a warm halo against the the dark BG to try and help the effect a little.
The fire should also be travelling up rather than down, but I didn't mess with that part as flames leaping off her head would totally change the feel.
I hope this helps somewhat, I've just tried to show how I would approach the same problem.
If you decide to do realistic hair instead, get a fashion magazine or two and find a reference for how light falls on hair.
Good luck Surferboi, and nice fire

RDGraffix thanks for the help on the image, i think ur idea totally changes the look and feel of the image more towards what i was hoping to touch on. heres my progress on the image so far
Please if you or anyone else is reading this and can help me find a way to make her face look correct the shade of the face to the tones the rest of the skin. Also how to avoid getting the extreme blotchy look.

Hey Superboi. Hrm. The left side of the face.. The lighting comin' from the flames is kinda screwed up. It is makin her head look fat to the left.. i think you should tyr and fix that up a bit. mbe try and re paint that part !
