Hi all. I know I haven't been around much, the lady thing, and Myst are keeping me from doing anything else right now. I have very little time to even think, it is kinda nice, yet maddening when I have a forum fix to appease and I can't get to it...

THis is an image of Rudolph Valentino, it is going to be a demo for my gouache class I am teaching this semester. I am going to try and scan this at various stages to show the build up, and hope to combine the images to make a tutorial on painting, which can be applied to any medium, including photoshop and painter.

Tear this apart any way you need to, I will try to get up here on the forum more consistently, at least if nothing else, for a hlaf hour a day or something. There is just way too many things getting posted on here to keep up, but I am really stoked to see the forum filling up with so many artists...very cool...see ya

Well, this is one of the best drawings i've seen do far, if not the best.
Im really impressed by the realism in the image. I dont know what else to say except that its beautiful.
Keep up the nice work and good luck on the gouache class you are teaching this semester

hmm...well tear it apart...we can all clearly see that this is your worst piece of work ever and the lighting is comletely off and the proportions of the face makes him look like hes from mars...hehehehe...just joke...brill stuff fred...how bout you come down under and teach me =)

I'm probably crazy, but it looks like his left eye and his nose don't like each other or something-they're trying to get away from each other! I didn't remember Rudolph's upper lip being so sharp, but I may be wrong there-I thought he had softer lips(complete with lipstick!).

Oh, and awesome rendering. If your lines were a more energetic and less thought out I'd compare it to Mucha.

I noticed the same thing. I think its got to do with the size of the left eye, the mouth, and chin. I've included the .jpg with the tweak. Its very subtle, and probably best noticed when overlayed over the original [Flip/Flop in P-Shop].

I could be completely wacky here, since I don't have nowhere near your skill. Since the piece is super great I really didn't want to post this in the forum, especially since I'm not sure I really have a valid point. Not to mention that the last thing I want to do is 'critique' someone with your awesome drawing abilities.

I'm really looking forward to the gouache tutorial!

I don't know what you did but it looks better to my eyes at the moment.

This forum is all about giving advice. No one (should at least) gets flamed for giving advice. Even if someone is wrong in what they are suggesting it still helps get the problem out in the open. Staring at something for ages makes you blind to it.

I may be completely off here with this one, but one thing that caught my attention in that drawing is the fact that the face has strong shadows, nearing black, but the neck area and the back of the hood that should be caught in the head's shadow are like 70% grey or something. Is it just a detail focus thing or ignoring that bit or something to do with backlight/radiosity/whatever?

Enlighten me

This is a very very nice drawing. I had nearly forgotten how much I sucked, thanks. (hehe). =)

Seriously though, this looks very nice, and the eye thing is kind of easy to spot since everything else seems so tight. I guess you worked off reference? This is just too nice. =) (small details like the rotated ring on his small finger, the cloth fold details and such, great stuff!).

Hmm, is the cloth over his head semi transparent, say like satin? If so, I would think his left eye should also get that 'sack' under it... not to mention that it would be an interesting thing to paint with all the diffused color it would create.

Thanks for all the feedback. The actor is in a strong light source with a hood over his head casting a very dark shadow into his face. He also hs a subtle down tilt to his head, so the eye sockets are in dark also. THis kinda makes it difficult to get strong hot spot highlights in his eyes. I understand what you guys are saying, LIquid, thanks for the example. I need to make the highlight stronger in the light side for sure. I kinda left it out of my thinking, and when I filled in the eye, I kinda lost the highilight too. THe other eye though shouldn't really have a highlight in it, ecause the shadow is causing the area to have the abscence of light, not enough bounce or reflective light to really make it that strong. There might need to be on in the eye, but I am not sure if it will spoil the illusion or not. I will give it a shot.

Joachim, it is done 11" x 14".
sharar2k-I agree with you on the spacing, I already reduced the circular frame by a half in all the way around, it looks more comfortable now.

I go now and start another hell day at work. Hopefully I will get the chance to get back on later to see all the new posts, I know the whole page will look different by 6 pm...heh

Sorry about the highlights in the eyes...

Didn't mean to have it that pronouced in the 'shadowy eye'. Just happend to copy the pupil from the other eye over, since the original one got to be too big after altering the size of the eye, and forgot to tone it down...

I'm with the rest of the people on this board - I would to have your tutorials posted somewhere (since the pics are long gone in the 'search' option).

I quite agree with Liquid, and the few other guys about the eyes. I think there is a big difference in size between the 2 eyes and more than that, they are not on the same horizontal line. This is something I do all the time (for some weird reason), and I think it's the main problem. It becomes quite obvious if you flip the image horizontally.For the shadows it's difficult to say without seeing the reference because obviously artificial lights were used for the photo, and artificial lights are by definition un-natural

(and can easily look weird).
Other than that, good job. And obviously hours of work were put in this one.
