I've never tried actually "painting" in photoshop so I figured I would give it a try.
I tried to use what I thought would be similar styles to painting on canvas.

Now, I know the sky isn't right but I just ran out of stuff that I thought I could do to make it look better.

Please dont be too harsh on it, this really isn't my style. Just an expirament.

However, constructive critisism is always welcome.

good start. It looks like a nice background for something... little blurry though. Use hard edged brushes and blend later. stay away from the airbrush.

Good morning ... ahem ... here we go:

Nice image for a first try! This is what I found whenb looking at it:

* Moon works - but there's a blacck rim around it, which defeats the glow.

* Why is the glow irregular

* Blue clouds too saturated, seem to be unimpressed by the moon's light - try to incorporate the moons lighting - will help defining them ( very difficult though, don't give up too soon!)

* Clouds look upright - they don't percede in perspective. Search for a thread that 'ceenda' started - it's his junglepic. I tried to help him how to get clouds in perspective

* The moon's reflection should be under the moon. Look at photoreference of the sun hitting the ocean - same principle

* reflectuions too blurry - try a hard brush. Make the reflections of individual waves melt together & msmaller as they go off in the distance. Will greatly help the spacial unfolding of the image ...

what would probably help for the moon is getting a picture of a full moon so you can see what it looks like and paint in the details, but its definately a good start

I wont overstep Loki's general direction, it is excellent help.

A couple things to think about though. One thing to reiterate, is the glow of the moon should be directly under the moon. With that said, you should also be aware of some things in the principles of composition, one namely being, do not put anything of great importance against the rail, or edge of a painting. The moon being where it is is in a strange locale. Use the width of the moon, and place the moon in the picture that far from the edge.

Another thing to consider is that water is lit based upon the volume of water vs. amount of light lighting that body of water. In this case, you have a night scene, which means that there is ver little penetrating light. The light on the moon is reflected light, therefore it wouldn't really light the volume of water the same way the sun would, or a submerged light. Therefore, the water you have would be more like black, than thalo blue, the color you have chosen to represent the ideal of water with. The only thing really visible about the water would be the defined horizon line that is usually visible at night, save moonless nights, and the dancing highlights that the moon would be creating on the surface of the water.

All in all, for your first time painting, you did a great job. With a computer, we are less apt to not try, vs. buying good paper, good paints, and fearing the worst.

Keep trying these exercises, and as you feel more confident, try adding more objects into your scenes. I think initially, you are a bit hesitant to try new things with painting, but you should find that there is nothing to fear, but the comments on this forum...heheh

My gimpy Aiptek tablet isnt working so I did that with a mouse, plus I was going totally from my imagination. I think I will start trying to find some pics of the moon and ocean at night, as per your suggestion.

I personally think the picture, though not technically superior, has an interesting effect. It looks very blurry, but I don't think it's THAT much of a problem. The water really looks geletinish, which is interesting.
