Okay, I think it would be funky fresh if everyone made some awesome pics in MSPaint and posted them here (after converting them to GIF or JPG, of course). No cheating, just solely MSPaint. Yeah. I'm gonna do one later, so you'll all be cool like me if you make one.

I wonder how many hooligans are gonna post scribbles and stickmen now...

You REALLY want to challenge yourself, try a limo art compo... (no, not the car.) It's a demo scene thing. Basically, you have 10 minutes to come up with a picture with only 8 colors... all of them hideous. And you have to use Deluxe Paint. I'd really like to see what someone like Spooge could come up with. At Coma 2, Snake Grunger did an awesome cartoon of some dude... (did you ever get a copy of that, by the way?)

Anyway, I'm rambling.

Here's my piece of work. I've never used mspaint before - i jumped straight from amiga dpaint to photoshop, there's some kind of a same touch in both deluxe paint and mspaint .

Hmm, It'd be fun to give dpaint a try, it's been a while since I used it last time.

Oh, and here's my fabulous artwork done with mspaint spraycan (and a mouse, of course =) ) :-

30 mins. Nice break from doing spaceships all the time... Was fun to do, except for the fact that I'd press shortcut keys for PS for each tool I needed. Is that just me? *sheepish grin*

Damn, why must I be AFTER faustgfx... Bravo bravo chap. @:-)

This is hard. I remember painting in macpaint on the macintosh plus. That sucked, I just didn't know it at the time. This picture sucks, too - I don't know why the water is black and the sand is gray green.

I also have a question for web savvy people - why is my image so big (~375K)? Not sure how to optimize it...

Bah, sorry Francis... Paint Shop Pro does the same thing to your pic as Photoshop. Exactly the same colors are turned to black... must be a similar algorithm.

Anyways, if you had saved the image as a bmp to begin with, then the JPEG natural anti-aliasing would not have set in and you could have saved it as a 16 color GIF which would make less than 57kb. I used the Magic Wand tool set at Tolerance 30 to select and fill all the major colors in your pic to get rid of as much color blending as possible in order to increase rows of similar colors.

If you use photoshop to convert a 24 bit bmp or lower to a GIF, then PS automatically counts all the colors and optimizes the palette. Palettes only take up 1 to 5 kb though... so no biggie. It was the similar rows of color that really condensed the byte size.

(End of graphics file fun!)

Francis-do you have imageready?.....I used it to take your pic down to 32kb and the image quality wasn't that bad I think I could do the same thing in photoshop...didn't try it though

Franics,

I opened your goil.jpg in Photoshop and tried some saving tests. Looks like you saved it as Quality 10 (highest) and had "Save Paths" checked on.

If you save it as Quality 7, there is indistinguishable lossy compression even on a 17" monitor). That made it only 116K in size. If you go any lower than 7, you'll begin to see the blockiness of JPEG show up. And just forget qual. 1 - 3. They aren't even useful for thumbnail shots! Yuck!

Also, I tried saving it as a 128 color GIF. Photoshop is not too smart about saving the important colors so I went for a palette size that would hold almost everything for sure while still being smaller. Of course, the purpose of decreasing the amount of colors in a gif is to get more repeating rows of pixels. More solid rows of tan and dark tan, and red and dark teal and so on. Even Paint Shop Pro 16 bit version has a better color reduction algorithm than PS.

As you may know, a 50% checkerboard of pixels is THE WORST thing to save to GIF format... it totally defeats the purpose of GIF (it will actually be bigger in KB than the BMP!!!)

Ooh, I wonder what a 50% checkerboard would look like in Quality 7 JPEG! Test time!

Oh yeah, and nice work Francis!

And Tinusch... contribute to your own topic or we'll DNS attack your favorite websites :P
It was your and Joachim's work on Loonygames that got me on Sijun to begin with :)
