I just got this book called 3D Studio Max 3 Magic. Once I saw it I knew I had to have it. I was standing there in the books section, and my jaw dropped when I saw the author list on this one.
Eni Oken, Neil Blevins, Brandon Davis...
If you are a fan of Neil Blevins' work (soulburn3d.com), you'll like this one, as he goes into how he does his backlighting and glossy, gross alien shellac materials using Blurbeta tools.
All in all, the best MAX "cook book" I have ever gotten. Usually these books have maybe one good tutorial out of 15. This one has about 4 or 5 good ones.
Just thought I should plug it

I don't think this is the place to talk about Max. Or books about Max.
Max sucks anyway. |

Hrm this is a forum about digital art and 3D is a form of digital artwork, even if he was specifically refering to 3D Studio Max.

Oh..
Blevins is good modeler and makes very nice 3d stuff but because Ben Barker mentioned that there is also woman called Eni Oken, so I have to bow her. She absolutely makes shocking eccentric stuff. She's great!

MAX SUCKS?? NO U SUCK BLACK FISH, U SUCK U SUCK!!!!! hehe jk
but seriously i love max and think that dhab should open separate 3d forum, a separate hardware forum, and a separate wacom forum
i dont know what problems that might cause(if any) or how difficult it is to do but i think its worth a shot.
this forum is my favorite site on the internet. .

shardik: having separate forums would be a near disaster. Dhab allready commented on this. Ever been to a forum with like 20 different forum subjects? Usually people only go to one, newbies never look at the others other than the one with the most posts, and it also becomes confusing. I know I get confused when I go to a forum with lots of different sub-forums. It rarely works. Thats why this forum is so great.. one place to go, lots of people willing to answer questions.

I work with Max EVERY day and I can tell you that this is one of the buggiest, unfriendly, convoluted piece of software (or should I say of hacked code) I had the displeasure to work with. Sure you can do great things in Max, like you can do great things with your fingers and some paint. That doesn't mean that Max is good. The only thing that made Max popular is that it was easy to find a pirated version of it. Now almost every studio is using either Lightwave, Softimage, or moving to Maya.
I did not want to start a war on what is waht the better program, but I frankly cannot say that a program that is crashing on me 4 or 5 times a day on average and lacks the most basic tools is a good program. If you think differently, that's your problem but you won't convince me that it's good.
Regarding this forum and 3D art: I think theere are a LOT of very good forums outthere for 3D stuff, but quite a few good pure 2D digital art forums. If we fill this forum with 3d stuff we will lose a lot of interesting people and interesting art in the middle of 'what do you think of the xdgrtpst plugin for Max?' and hundreds of assorted dry technical threads. Please spare this forum and keep it 3D free! |

You guys who say that MAX crashes 3 to 4 times a day should really look at your hardware instead of just blaming the software. I run max everyday and it hasn't crashed on me in months! If your computer is a piece of crap that could cause it to crash. Make sure that your computer components are compatible before blaming the software. NT with a wildcat card helps a lot! =) |

I think by limiting this forum to 2D, or 3D is pointless. Truly diverse artists incoporate all methods into their work.
I find it hard to believe a digital artist of your experience is so closed minded. Every program has its advantages and disadvantages. It is very stubborn of you to claim, simply, one program sucks or another.
I guess the the thousands of other 3D artists who love MAX, swear by it, and make awesome artwork with it are just using it because they found a warezed copy on usenet and don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.
I mean, Jesus, Blizzard just gets lucky. Id Software doesn't know shit about the industry. Blur Studios obviously wouldn't know good software if it hit them in the ass.
I'm sorry if I bothered you with my recommendation. I mean, it was such a pain in the ass for you to click on this link and read my free advice.
Sorry I fucked up your forum. It won't happen again, sir.

You sound a bit frustrated to me..
I mean first of all: Max really never crashed on me so either u are using some shitty plugins or the computer you are working on is crap. (config/ software/ hardware.. don't know)
And second: Who says this is a painting only forum? There has been some 3d artwork posted through time and there will be in the future so whats wrong with that?
In my opinion MAX is popular because its cheaper than Maya Softimage and Lightwave. |

I guess I flew off the handle a little bit. Sorry.
MAX is a decent tool, and works great under the proper environment. That's all I meant to say.

I am so sorry guys. I was so wrong. Frustrated, and whatever else, for whatever reason, but thanks to you I see the truth now. Max is a great program. I asked my boss to buy me something better than a P800 running NT, and better plugins than Character Studio. And I look so much forward to read all those threads about how to use Shag/Fur and about the tricks and tips of Peter Watje's Unwrap+.
Now my life is complete. |

Dear....God....The....Sarcasm is so....overwhelming.....
All animation packages suck in one way or another.
The best tool for the best job.
We use Max primarily where I work, but some of the animators like to model in lightwave. All we did was make sure the pipeline from Lightwave to Max was as clean as possible. That way everyone can work in whichever package suits them.
