I just recently picked up a set of prisma cool greys. Wow. I love em already! They take some getting used to.. but its so much quicker than graphite.. My question to all of you who do marker drawings is, How do you start when you set out to do a marker sketch? you can't go back and erase anything.. and do you guys prefer cool greys, or warm greys? Any positives or negatives of either set or just a matter of preference?

I'd love it if anyone who does marker renderings would post them in this thread. I'd post my first attempts, but I don't have access to a scanner.

Thanks,

I like cools...since you can't erase you can just use the lights to blotch and then layer til dark. I think it's mostly pref thou.

I don't have access to a scanner to show you examples of how I do them, but maybe I can explain a little.

One method I use is IDENTICAL to Doug Chiangs method. He has a tutorial on his site: www.dchiang.com

Another method I use is drawing with a Black Verithin pencil and then scanning it or photo-copying it and then rendering on top of that with markers.

When rendering, I'll usually start with a 20% or 30% cool grey and work up in values from there. I use every other value. For example, if I start with a 30%, then the next to I'll use will be a 50% and then a 70%. The final step is to paint or draw in highlight. I use either Designers Gouche or White Prismacolor.

OK, that's all I can think of right now. hope this helps you out.

Do any of you have marker renderings posted on your website, or know of galleries that include marker renderings?

I looked through Chiang's site, and couldn't find a tutorial. Where is it?

Awesome work of course. My roommate has a 'Art of Star Wars' book, and 90% of the good illustrations were his.
