I'm sure you get this question over and over again, but I'm new :|
Did you draw the sketch by hand and scan it in, or did you draw it on the computer via Wacom?

Thx -

Looking good Veb. I'd love to see you draw some actual Mideval type guys tho. No offense ofcourse just that I think it would be cool to see what you can produce after the right researched armor. I say this because. what kind of women/warrior in their right mind would armor the arms and upper torso but run around pretty much naked other than that. PluS the chicks sword is just WAY to big for her. Also it looks like you got lazy on the background (No offense again, sesh dont want to gcome off wrong) just that you kinda did the same with the Fem warrior/Tiger pic.

None the less its really cool

I don't think Veb knows how to draw pants or underwear.

Cool pic, by the way.

Hey, come on, she's got Conan on her side. She doesn't need armor! (If I was going to complain about anything, though, it would be the 75lb sword she's lugging around.) Cool picture though. And I think you put the perfect amount of detail in the background. Any more and the picture would be way too cluttered.

Are you people really serious about wanting to know why Veb's females are the way they are?
It's the type of art he does, it's not meant to be realistically portrayed. It's the way that genre of art is meant to be.
If his women has full body armor, they wouldn't be as sexy or exotic, all the mystery would be gone and we would be faced with everything vebs wants us to know. Instead he creates art that makes us asks questions, the mystery is there and all the answers are not obvious to us, so we have to study the images to figure the out. I think his placement and design have improved alot though, before everything was centered on the page, now he's moving things around, making our eyes move through the entire image, and not just in one spot.
Great stuff as always.

Been following this for some time now. Think its about time I said my opinion about this, for what it's worth. I hope this is taken the right way, and that everyone understands this is not meant to start a flame-war or anything like that. Its just my opinion =), hear it out if you want to.

Every time Veb posts a new image the following discussion always seems to evolve more around the subject matter (like for example nudity) than the art itself? He ends up spending almost all his time defending why he draws what he draws. Well, I can understand well that to many people, nude women/big barbarians with big swords and so on can get boring. Yes, we've seen it all before, there's thousands more images of the same kind. But the same can be said about sci-fi art, with the big guns, big robots, big spaceships, hot cyber-women and whatever, yet I don't see anybody getting all worked up about that. Some people paint what they paint for a reason, whether it be nude women, matte-paintings, creature designs or what ever. The reason being that it's a job, it is targeted at a specific audience who likes just that sort of stuff, and maybe even the artist himself actually LIKES painting it as well! So why all the sarcasm? I think he would rather spend his efforts commenting on art technical issues and dealing with problems/suggestions people have about the artwork, like maybe theres an anatomy problem, that sword looks too heavy, something looks weird or similar things.. I do think thats the reason he keeps posting here. Not to defend why he draws a woman with no underwear! Thankfully, theres at least a few people who manage to keep their replies constructive, coming with good suggestions and helpful insight. I hope more people will do the same..

My point is that everyone has their own thing, what they like and what they don't. Live with it, and try to appreciate it for what it is. Don't try to "convince" the artist to draw something different when you know its being done for an actual job, it just comes off as rude when he ends up having to defend himself from arguments like "he doesn't know how to draw underwear" and such. The difference with Veb when it comes to his Conan/barbarian women art, is that he's doing just what is needed to sell his art to a magazine. And with a track record like Vebjorns, with around 50 (plus-minus) Conan covers on print, hes got more experience doing just that than any other Norwegian artist to date. And I doubt theres too many others out there in the world who have done that many covers for the same magazine. Just keep that in mind the next time, its done that way for a reason. If it was for a different magazine the subject matter would have been different.

Phew, this became a little longer that I had intended. I hope no-ones in any way offended by this, just my opinion and letting off a little steam on an issue I have been following for a while now thats a little close to home, he heh!

Anyway, thanks for listening

Well spoken Christer..

although in this particular thread it wasn't so bad, I'm surprised to see how frequently Veb's stuff get's bashed on this forum. Sometimes I'm amazed he still posts here.
Veb, keep 'em coming and let no one deter you from doing what you do best!

I agree with the previous posts. Veb is definitely a very good and talented artist, and I respect him for it. I must say I hate manga and plastic japanese mech paintings more than Conan stuff, but, that's just my oppinion. I try to never put down a drawing because of the content or style, that's up to the artist's discretion, not ours.

I really dont understand why Christa typed that. Personal I think its irrelevant and contridicting. She says to make suggestions and to note anatomical errors (which some have been stated already) but when you note on his style or how and why you dislike the image....She gets all defensive. First I'd like to say that if you dont want to deal with some negative critism then dont post. I mean come on. NO ONE in this thread has made a personal attack on Vebs style or his picture. HELL they said they liked the pic after they commented on it. I also think you should note sarcasm Christa. and not take offensively... Jeez...

Ohwell back to typing notes in class. teehehe.

One additional comment I'd like to make. It seems to me that people comment on Veb's subject matter more than the art itself for the simple fact that Veb is an incredibly talented artist, and there's very little in his pictures that actually needs critiquing. It's a similar situation when Spooge or Fred or anyone like that posts a pic... people either resort to wanton praise (see Micke's latest thread), or they discuss the subject material. And, from my perspective, there's been very little discussion that hasn't been in good fun. Though I guess it all depends on how Veb takes it. We'll just have to see if he keeps posting.

Very nice work Very graphic I especially love the design of the woman's sword...The backround is somewhat lacking...but I'm sure that'll change once this piece is blessed with paint

First, big thanks to Christer for his fine "speech". Couldn`t have said it better myself. And he is a he not a she;-)

1. I have almost been "attacked" personnally here for my style. As for style, it`s far easier to see Frazetta infuence in an fantasy image, than in the guys here that are inspired from less obvious artists or comic artist..like Frank Miller, and ..darn ..can`t remember his name..whatever.

2. I don`t give a flying fuck. I even find some of the comments from time to time a bit funny. If I did get really offended, I would quit posting a long time ago.

3. But I must agree with christer, alot of comments tend to narrow down to; why don`t you do this or that, or why are your chicks naked etc.
Although through all the fun and sarcasm some very helpful hints come. Like comments on the "Leatherbabe`s" butt. When I get many critics on the same subject, even if I can`t see errors myself since I`ve gotten used to the image, I will look furterh into it. I still have some "babyfat" in my images, and thanks to the critical people here, I can probably iron them out much quicker, than if I did not post. Those gains are worth a little "why do you paint supercheesy fantasy chicks and barbarians with big swords" Those comments don`t really bother me, so it`s pointless posting them. I`m not as seasoned as Spooge that what I do is flawless, and when you work with more comic like images, rather than photrealism, I also get more flaws. Some are because of "style" and deliberate like what Bisley does, other are flaws that really takes down the quality. Sometimes one have to dig through the mud to find a piece of gold.

Look for images in the future of halfnaked scifi chicks with manga armour and big gunz..kidding...well almost.

Hiya Veb...

For what it's worth, I really dig the b&w sketch. And the absence of a full background gives it a real bleak feeling for me (in a good way), kind of how some asian screen paintings are (you now?). And I like how you mussed her hair up. Makes her look weather-worn in a windy envionment. I never knew you did so many Conan covers. Very cool... have you ever met Frazzeta?

Very good work Veb. Your b&w is definetely amazing! I asked before but got no answer: are you doing those illos for books, covers, magazines? Where are they published?

For the other guys: if you want some historical 'verisimilitude', there was a special group of celtic woman warriors who fought naked under the waist to 'distract their opponents'. Some roman writer reported that but nothing has been proved. Other than that celtic warriors were quite often fighting naked to show their bravery.
So you can have nudity AND be historically accurate. Even if nobody really cares about that

Oh man I will have weird nightmares today.
Just imagine a clan of angry celtic warriors charging with their genitals flopping around.

A terrific sight for sure..
