ello, haven't been in here for quite a while, I was hoping that everyone would of turned rubbish by now! but no luck hehe.
These are some attempts at digitally painting without using any filters or textures (or dodge and burn!). Something I haven't done
enough of. They're ust character concepts so no backgrounds Anyways comments and tips would be cool =)

Nice work Cos! I esp. like the toning on the soldiers arms.
The only thing that lets it down a bit is the texture of his pants, maybe get some reference as to how they would hang - get a friend to pose or something.
The monster looks great except for the right side of his mouth. Making the teeth on the very right seem to recede more should help there.
-sidenote- I just realised that almost everything I post of this forum is a criticism - damn. I guess it's because I see this forum as a great way to improve rather than just get a load of 'Ooooh, perty pic!'s, and I'm just trying to give the suggestions that I like to recieve on my own work.
Oh well, may we all live on, ever improving untill we are all powerfull enough to create a society of elite artists and controll the world
... um, yeah. - I need more sleep

That is great. I should try not using the
burn tool. I think the textures on the arms
and legs are great. THe legs look a bit like
concrete, but they look good!

looks nice Cos, it's good that you've made some art without using overlaying textures. -good to avoid being too dependent on such things
Two things. Some smaller color variations, like skin more grey around the chins and more red in other parts etc... would be very nice.
Also, I've noticed that you make the legs a bit too blocky some times. I know they are supposed to be, but without some more variation in shapes they easitly turn in to looking more cartoonish than the rest of the character, if you see what I mean ?. And, if they are supposed to be blocky, then try to illustrate the perspective of the shoes etc...
but other than that, nice pictures, nice anatomy and all. Keep up the good work !

Jenn, LethargicBoy, Chapel, Nex, The Dude and Kat thankyou!
I haven't done much of working in this style so is great to
get a good response on it
Rd : Thanks m8! Yeah the texture you see on the trousers is actually
pen marks which weren't totally worked out from the original sketch.
Does kinda look a lil scrappy, coulda worked that some more I guess..
I get what you mean on the monsters teeth too, if I darken
the edge some more it shoud look more like its curving round more.
and don't worry, if your crit is constructive and helpful (which it was)
then I want to hear it. If its just "bluddy ell mate thats frakkin shite"
then erm, it'd probly be alot less useful
Joachim : Thanks alot guy! Good point on the colour variations too.
Like greyer on the chin from stubble n stuff, didn't think enough
about that actually. I agree about the legs being a lil blocky too,
coulda emphasized the knee's some more.
I think this piece has been influenced by you and Micke a bit actually,
trying to develop a neater and sharper style so I'm glad you liked it ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |
