Here's something I spent a little time one. The sketch took me 20 minutes, so since i did'nt plan on coloring it I decided to render it in the sketch. But I had a change of heart and the coloring took approximately 45 minutes. Not some of my best stuff but it's giving me a break from 8 straight days of box drawing in high school.

I know what you mean, I've been practising boxes and spheres and stuff and it'll drive you nuts after awhile. The Library section in LA seems apealing after doing too many boxes and spheres, I swear
On the picture (you got it working now) it looks really, really painty which isn't bad I guess. Can't figure out what it is, but pretty good

i probably shouldn't be critiquing right now, as i'm on my 3rd corona..but i'll give it a shot, maybe it help clear up my lengthy critiques..
You're almost there with this one, it's lacking some dimension. It feels pretty flat, maybe because your colors are all midrange tones. Don't be afraid to add some more colors or brighter colors in there.
Try to work your image as whole. Don't start on one side and then work your way across, even something as simple as this (no background or foreground) can be worked as a whole. It looks like you started on one area and then worked your way across it's body.
It's good to see your working in the shapes and not worrying about the details of the image. I can see where you where concentrating on the color value as it falls off in the darker areas. Also think about where you want your strokes. Let them follow the form of the body, if you don't your painting will become stiff or brittle in appearence (more beer = bad spelling..sorry)
Seeing as your starting into all this stuff pretty early (highschool) I strongly recommend looking at the masters..no no, not Spooge, Fred or Veb or the otehrs, but the big guys, Leonardo, rembrant etc. Backwards engineer thier paintings, try to copy them stroke for stroke, do what ever it takes to gain that ever important understanding of tones and painting techniques.
While I'm at it...
Spend as much time as you can using real world materials, like real paint, real oils etc. Photoshop, painter or what ever will allways be here. It's ok to start learning the software, but don't rely on it as your main tool right now.
Keep at it, one day you'll be looking at your old stuff and say to your self "what the heck was i thinking"

http://poyn.tripod.com/dude.JPG "What the heck was I thinking?!?!" that's from January. I know I'll be saying that for the rest of my life cause I'm one of those people who is satisfied with there work for maybe a day if that. It's my motivation. But samdragon I really appreciate your comments, and you're right I did start from one area then migrated to another and will fix that. And I know painter and photoshop I use for fun right now, I haven't really gotten a chance to use the painting mediums watercolor/oils/acrylics/guoache/etc. but I know I will either in school or on my own terms. I got too much to learn :/
Thanks both of you for your comments I'll work on it a little later but for now I remain feeling like shit and being sick. |
