...Horizons. A new RPG coming out for PC. It looks fantastic, the engine, the art, the models... the techniques being implemented into the game. I mean... MY GOD.
We should all do some "fan art" for this game ... I mean, it gives you so many ideas as for what to draw.
Here, just have a look at this site - look around and tell me you're not motivated.

Okay, NO. I had a look, and it's patheticly unorigional. I could understand if you're not exposed to a lot of RPG's, or you don't read much, But I'sure you are and do. Draw stuff from Chrono Cross (beautiful game, colorfull and rich) or Draw from a Final Fantasy game, or Riven/Myst games.
This..Horizons game, looks new. That's all I can say. The concept art was unorigional. Sorry about going on about this, it's just that Elves/Dwarves/Cheezy Orcs/Bland Dragons have been used SOOooooo much. Everyone read Lord Of The Rings and now they're all doing it! Tolkien was the man who brought them to life in the way we see them now, but I hate it when people can't think up their own solid ideas and use them in nearly every RPG out there. If you want something to draw, think of your own RPG like me and my friend have. I've got endless stuff to draw now. Just in my opinion, lets leave orcs and elves alone for a while. They will still be here when we get back, and who knows what new ideas for them we might have. |

That's basically the reaction I had to it when I saw it: "uninspired."

*sniff* *sniff* they remind me of the Tresspaser screenshots, and we all know what kind of bull that turned out to be. Silicon Graphics machines be damned, my poor pentium 233 at the time DIED. And that damn, buggy, stupid game... 50 bucks down the hole... (hey, I'm 15, thats a lot of money!)

Dragons! Dragons! Dragons! I love dragons, i can't get enough of them, anything with adragons, I like. Man, i love fantasy rpgs and midieval stuff, I guess its just what i'm into! Castles wizards, dragons knights, hot princesses in pink seethrough dresses, I love it all! Midieval Stuff KICKS ASS. I like the concept art on the site though, I like the character lineup, thats pretty cool.

Just had another look at the screens...Having a lensflare in a game doesn't make it incredible. looks like a poorly used Unreal engine. Sorry, just forgot to add those points |

Jeezuz Guys y'all tyring to make StormVermin run of cryin'? Sheesh. So he likes the classic Swords and Scorcery stuff, so what? I like it to. Just because EVERYONE is doing it doesn't mean that we have to assume they ALL SUCK! I mean I'd hate to think that the gaming industry has raped that genre completely! There have got to be a few good ones out there. Examples? Warcraft III, not out yet but you KNOW that the wizards at Blizz and B.North are gonna put a new spin on it that no-one can touch. Anyone else got any examples? Swords and Scorcery is NOT DEAD! It's just a little tired right now.

Hey Storm, me and my sis are bigtime Horizon fans. For us, it is definitly the Gameplay that is bringing the anticipation.
You're right, Horizons IS bringing new techniques to the online MMORPG genre rules by UO, AC and EQ. None of those games have 20 foot tall dragons, "realer" grass that you can actually step in, governments to ovethrow or even an underwater race worth note (never played EQ, so sue me).
Douglas Schuler of Magic the Gathering illus. fame, may be dishing out the Tolkieneque, but the rate at which he does it (and the rate at which the models are created, skinned and animated) is astounding to myself.
I think this game is going to be a mix of Diablo II and Asheron's Call (Diablo II because of the virtual fashion show it imposes (paraphrased from www.salon.com))
For all you Horizon-Yawners, check out Atriarch at http://www.atriarch.com. That game is ALL original... more original than the Frankenstein's Monster that is UO2... hehe |

"Swords and Scorcery is NOT DEAD! It's just a little tired right now."
I certainly agree with this. They are not dead, just tired. And you know what happens when something gets tired? It sleeps. I don't hate Elves/Dwarves/Dragons/Etc. I just hink we should back off a bit, leave it alone for a few years, then come back after a nice vacation. by then it'll be nice and refreshed. (I know this will never happen, ever, its just an ideal situation, like pure communism)
Maybe this is opinion comes from being at Elfwood for 3 years... |

I've been on the net for over 8 years and I'm 15... My dad's office was some of the first people I heard of to get the net, and our home got it soon after, somewhere around 10 years ago, not sure exactly. I've had a computer at my fingertips as long as I can remember.

I see this on mailing lists and message boards a lot . . . someone really likes something, thinks its the greatest, and then assumes everyone else will agree with them. How could they /not/ like it and be inspired by it?
Fact is, every artist has a different asthetic and different sources of inspiration . . . I happen to love minimal techno, manga, and landscapes . . . but expecting others to leap on your favorite bandwagon is misguided.
What you're doing is putting something you appreciate, treasure, or enjoy, and letting the masses shrug their shoulders at it. I've seen it really anger people, especially when someone thinks that their religion or favorite book should be inspirational to everyone . . . it can feel like everyone has turned against you, but in reality, the people shrugging their shoulders are really just perfectly content with the things they already like.
Just some advice from a guy who's been on the net for eight years.
