As I have metioned before we're learning Freehand 9 in my Commercial arts class. Well I was in a chat room the other day and this guy says no one uses freehand 9 or any other freehand any more. Is this true? If it is I'm not going to waste my time going into it a great deal... if it isn't I'm going to learn as much as I can about it... So is this dude full of himself...
And ummm they also said that PhotShop is just for rendering text... funny! After that was said I figured their a bounch of dorks who learned a few terms and wanted to look big and bad.

Jabberwocky-
They sound like a right bunch of idiots. Yes people use Freehand 9. Not for drawing tho. My Girlfriend is doing some freehand stuff in a class at the moment. They get you to do Illustrations with it. Waste of time. The only good thing about vector is that it's small in terms of file size and can be enlarged without getting all pixely. It gives nice smooth, precise lines as well which is good for technical drawing. People use it for Logos a lot (read pretty much every logo is made into vector). You can then use it on all the statonary at different sizes, put on the front of an anual report at A4 size or you can carve it out of ten foot high steel sheet. Very versatile. Good for highly graphic stuff. It depends where you go as to whether people use Illustrator or Freehand. In some parts of the world one is the industry standard while it's differnt elsewhere.
People used vector when 'puters where new, It was good becuase of the small file size and clarity. Now you can do a bit more of the stuff in PS but I'd hate to mess around with a bitmap logo.
So yes people use it (I mean come on, Adobe and Macromedia just brought out new versions do you think they'd do that for fun)I think it is a stupid way to draw a picture that is not totaly graphic though.
"PhotShop is just for rendering text" wtf...LOL.

Photoshop for only rendering text?! Aaaahahahh! I almost pissed on myself when I saw that! As for freehand, like said I don't know anyone that actually draws in it....but a free of mine who's a layout designer use both freehand and illustrator like it's almost extinct! So in other groups it has a huge purpose! And tell those guys to come lick the colours off our Adobe paintbrushes! |

Here in Spain (and Europe I guess) just about every graphic designer uses Freehand. Not a single soul uses Illustrator (except for me, but I am not a GD either), which I think is the opposite from the other side of the Atlantic. It's not used for illustration at all, more for complex layouts that must go beyond QuarkXpress or Indesign, and simpler things as logos and the likes.

Waste of time and ...?? huh ??
Vector OWNS outside this pixelworld. I used to work as a 'normal' graphic artist for some years and v for vector came before a in the vocabulary.
Even color pixel pics that came in were vectorized and the diff colors rasterized for printing. The printing industry is on vector.
Vector is still used as it was 10years ago, scratch (mostly) PS and pixels outside this digi world. |

StrangeFate-
I don't understand, are you saying that people still use Vector for Illustration? If so give some examples of where it would be used instead of a pixel image and why. I'd be interested to know.

Did some of you saw the now defunct Fractal Design's Expression. A vector illustration program. The most unintuitive traditional painting program, but still I saw some holy wacamole pictures done with it. mmm... I think I have the demo somewhere. I'll install it and post some of the sample pictures, you'll be impressed.

Okay When I saw the freak say the PS was used for rendering text only trust me i laid in to him after laughing for about 20 minutes. I told him if he was so stupid i would tell him about this site, but I didn't want to be the person who allows a stupid imbreed (no offence to anyone) in here.

Here they are. This are some (most in fact) of the sample images that came with the demo version of Fractal Design's Expression, "The Revolutionary Natural-Media(TM)
Vector Drawing Tool".
linework of #1
As you see it was a program more intended to do artistic illustration than real painting, but still I think it gave astonishing results. It worked more or less the same as Illustrator 8 later did with its brush strokes (or skeletal strokes as FD called them). It consisted basically of a vector shape flowing along a path you drew with the tablet. Same as Illustrator too it had pressure sensitivity (by default assinged to size, I do not know if it could be assigned to transp, though, sliders are always uncomfortable), so the stroked shape could go thiner and thicker along the same path. Had some more additional cool features, but since the demo would not let me save I did not play with it a lot. Also I think this way of "painting" is not very intuitive since for cool results like those it is better not to clutter the image with lots of brush strokes, but use the right ones cleverly, so you had to have lots of control and quite a clear vision of what you wanted to get before you started to paint at all, little space for experimenting on the way. Since it was v1 it lacked lots of must-have features, such as layers, although maybe I bypassed some since as I said I did not play a lot with it. Unfortunately this is not on sale anymore, so if someone would want to share his license or knows of an "alternative" way to get a fullworking version I would more than apreciate to hear from you ;) The people behind Expression, later at Metacreations, have started a new Fractal company, so maybe they will pick it up again.
PS: I DID NOT MAKE THE PICTURES!!! (phew, just avoided the new flame thread of the day :p)
