Just my opinion -
The two horn things that are sticking up look misplaces... i don't like them there, looks too cartony. But that's just my opinion.

Hey
First, what I like in the pic how the detail is used to depict distance. There's clearly back- mid- and foreground.
However, the color use works against the illusion. In fact, I think it's the only problem with the pic: you have too much midtones going on everywhere. Nothing stands out so it ends up looking flat. For example,
all the walls have almost the same midtone of brownish grey, while you would expect the foreground have much greater contrast, and the rocks farthest away to fade into the fog you have floating near the sky.
Using color and contrast more strongly, I believe, would help the picture. Unless this kind of hopeless feel is what you're after.
(the "cartoony" look of the bones might be lack of shading)

Hi there Nex!
The pic is looking great so far! With regard to crits, I think that Gecko has really said my point already.
You've got some light shading at the top of those distant cliffs, it would be quite cool if the whole cliff faces were alot lighter the further away they were as this would really give the pic a greater sense of depth.
Also, even though the water there isn't clear, I think there should perhaps be a stronger reflection with regard to the bones in the water.
BTW - You've done the rocks really well here. Great stuff! |

ex, gecko, ceenda: thanks
This midtone look comes along with the way I draw rock surfaces in the moment I believe. I was aware of it but did not know how obvious it was. I will have to find a better way to render these things.
And thanks for pointing out the water/ bone problems.
I will work on it and post the result again.

Neat! Muddy water looks good, but i'm not reading a definite light direction. |

thanks wacomomkey, you are right about the lighting situation. i tried to improve on that and make the light come from the front (over the mountain) and above. It did not work out very good though.
here is what I achieved so far and this will probably be the last version of this picture as I see nor real improvement to the previous version.
Maybe I should do a bit more research on lighting and rock structure before I post the next picture.
thanks for helping me out anyway guys, and if you have some handy tips or suggestions for improvement .. just hit that reply button down there

Nex,
an image with a lot of potential! To be honest, I like the first version better. I don't think you've really solved the problem of the diffuseness (if that is a valid word at all ) of the light. I'm positive that if you work on it a bit more (try diffirent approaches) you'll come up with something great! I would have the light come from the top right, very strong, mild yellow sunlight rather than an overcast approach as you've got going now. Overcast skies tend to diffuse things as it is. Maybe even throw in some thick light beams. Loki's last Lodge image had a good approach on lighting. The top of the cliffs receiving lots of light thus being the brightest part of the rocks, and then gradually falling more into the shadows as you descent. I think that would solve most of the problem.
The water looks very realistic!
Well done..

I see those horns and it's like... I REALLY wanna see what they lead to underwater... what type of skull or tail or whatever is down there. Ace job on that. I think composition is much harder than rendering. |
