Poor little airbrush sits there overshadowed by paintbrush so I thought I'd give him a fair chance. Well, not really, the pic I did actually began as a painting exercise but I sucked at that so I used the airbrush instead. Oh and I didn't use any reference, but I guess you'd already be able to tell (it has a crappy fake look):

Any advice, critique or comments would be most helpful.

the first word that comes to mind is 'shiny'.. i love shinies.

I haven't seen this particular colouring style yet.. it looks like a cousin of comic book style colouring but sketchy and globby at the same time. again, i like it. my favorite part would be his right cheek (out left) and the double highlights on the eyes.. they give them a very profound look.

One thing i suggest is that since you're painting the guy straight on, you should aim for being more symmetric, since the human ideal is that anyway. Unless of course that's the idea, not being symmetrical and making a not-so attractive individual. I'm mostly speaking of the bottom half of the face, of the lips being slightly angled and his left cheekbone not quite being as smooth as his right.

Another thing: that whatchamacalit between the nose and mouth should have a shadow that doesn't quite reach the upper lip (like on most humans). either that or make sure the shadow goes right to and matches the highest point of the 'heart shape' like the other side ..if you get my drift. ask me if you need clarification

'nuff,

Thank you nova!
Being symmetric and keeping everything 'in place' is a problem I have when drawing straight onto the computer. With the beginning lines I make sure everything is nicely in place, but after a while of trimming and adding colour here and there, parts tend to 'float' all over the place, in this case, I lost the symmetry in the structure of the jaw. I'm looking to improve this with every pic I do.

Oh and the "whatchamacalit" (nice way to put it ) thing, I think I understand what you are trying to say. I'm not very experienced when it comes to lighting faces so I try to think of everything as planes. That's why the whatchamacalit has been shaded right to the lip. Sometimes I'm too busy thinking about planes that I don't think about the 'reality' of the image.

Next time I do a pic, I think I might use a photo to refer to, because with each of these pics I do, I seem to make the same mistakes.

Thank you again for the well thought out reply Nova. Anyone else?
