Make a new layer, set to multiply, and just paint/airbrush right over it. |

What the hell is it?
Difficult to make something that abstract looks 'photorealistic'. I don't see how I could help you.
That looks a little like a tree so I think you should find some tree pictures (use Altavista search engine for images) and try to match the lighting and the texture. If it's a tree... |

Thanks guys, and yes it is a tree with an artistic form of personification, making something inanimate look alive in a human sense. Thanks for your comments and help.

A trick that I find awesome with line art is to (with PhotoShop):
1) Add in a new adjustment layer - levels
2) move the left hand slider to the right, slightly past the first hump
3) move the right hand slider to the left,
slightly before the last hump
(this should clean up the image a bit)
4) Merge the two layers
5) Go to the chanels palette, control-click (PC) to load the layer
6) Invert the selection
7) Create a new layer
8) Fill on that new layer
9) Create a new layer below the one you just filled and colour this layer
OK, using the multiply is a very quick way of doing this proceedure BUT, whatever was white, is now truly gone. This will enable you to keep the lineart separate from the colour/shading layer. Hopefully this will make some sense, if not email me and I'll try to explain further (can be tricky but once mastered, saves you alot of time). |

My quick take on it.
And the steps.
The top line is the layer type, the first row is the image on each layer, the last row is the mask (if any) on each layer.
The first image is the original.
The second is I colored over the line art with a solid color on a blank layer.
The third was sime simple, quick white shading done with the the airbrush, also originally just a blank layer (the black is there so you can see it) and a layer mask (the shape copied from the original flat color).
The fourth is the same as the third, only done with black, again on a blank layer with a mask. Most people seem to like to just use the dodge burn tool and go to town on the solid shape in the second layer, but I like to keep things apart for easier editing later.
The fifth layer was to quickly give the image more depth. I just took the original image, desaturated it (made it black and white), upped the contrast, and then applied emboss on it. Overlay+mask and there you go. Instant depth, but looks a little cheap.
The last layer doesn't matter, just a greyscale background with a mask to keep it from drawing over the original. (And yes, I realize the owl and the bird are gone.)
This took me maybe 15-30 minutes, and from there it's an easy task to go back and add details and play with lighting more, possibly get rid of the original line art completely.

Cyber Artist - that was a cool technique and laid out quite well. Maybe you should consider making a tut out of it with Dryfire's OK.
Just a suggestion
P.S. Your site was pretty cool!
