http://jason12.virtualave.net/paint.jpg

That's the URL to the pic. It's kinda big, about 144kb, sorry bout that. It took me about an hour (I know I'm slow)

Anyway, I'm having a really hard time trying to get my head around the quick painting thing. I'm trying to move away from pencil and line, but as you can see, I couldn't resist not crosshatching it.

I have problems when painting, like I tend to gradually loose a lot of the basic structure and foundation of the image during the process. Maybe I'm too loose and I'm throwing colours around too much.

I think the weakest part of the image is the eyes. I might have to concentrate on that more. And also, I have a problem with muddyness. (my 8 year old brother even noticed it)

If anyone has any helpful comments, I would really appreciate it as it would help me move towards painting.

-Jason

BTW: it's not a self portrait, just a generic face out of my head

I am definitely not the person to listen to..I am more of a 3d character modeler and animator..however, I do love characters..and so..I will comment, hoping some of the more accomplished artists elaborate more than I.

As you said..the eyes..have problems. The characters left eye..looks kind of toward the camera..and has some "soul to it"..the other eye looks more away..wanders..and is really blank-looking.

Shading/shadows..under the chin..the cross-hatch shadow is really too strong..Id blur it a bit..or fade it in more with the skin tones..etc. Same with below the ear..the strokes are too evident...so fade those out more Or add facial hair!

The head's right nostril is partially obscured, but seems a bit small, even with the perspective..easy enough to fix.

The hair..the eyebrows..the two eyebrows are different. I like the character's bushier left brow..and I would try to emulate that for his other eyebrow. The rest of the hair is pretty darn cool..though it does look a bit odd over his right temple area..but I dont know what to do about it. It looks too..hair-sprayed out..you know?

Now then..I really do like your style of sketching and cross-hatching, I like the colors you chose (especially the hair) and I think it is going to turn out great..better than my 2d digital characters for sure. A little tweaking..and you should be a-ok!

Thank you very much worthy, it's really helped

I think I just need to spend more time on the pic to help define everything and strighten all the weird bits out.

I didn't really want to spend a long time on it though because the purpose of it was to try to get better at quick painting, but oh well

Isric: Thanks for your comment, funny though, I actually thought the colours were bad, hehehe.

Thanks again guys, anyone else?

New Version.........

Thanks for the reply matt. I decided to scrap the hair and put new hair on.

I tried to make it look better and I tried to fix up the muddyness as much as I could, but in the end I still resorted to putting hatching in.

I like it a bit more, but I still think it's crap. I think mainly because I have bad colour choice and his right eye is too far out.

As stated in the heading, any comments or helpt would be apprectiated.

Well sir i think the thing thats really making it look funny, is the spacing between the eyes. Genertally the distance between the two eyes is about the size of one eye. therefore moving the eyes closer together i think will improve the painting and make you look less mentally retarded LOL!

But serious that pic is kicking ass so far, if you just fix those eyes it will be really good! also you might want to toss in a background color of some sorts other than white
