It's good to see that you're taking a more respectable approach toward this (and VERY good to see that you didn't just leave the forum when faced with adversity!)

A couple things, first with the way you signed the pic... You may want to write "original sketch by Alan Tew" or "colored by Binder" or something like that, so that people can tell who gets credit for what. You'd be doing both yourself and Alan Tew greater service in this regard.

Second, your coloration seems pretty good, though you missed a few spots. (like where the kid's body meets the edge of the floater)

And, I have to say (at risk of starting up the flame war again), you should really credit the original artist on your splash page, either by putting his name in the image, or just putting some text underneath. And once you get your scanner working, it could only be to your advantage to get some completely original art up there.

your coloring problem is basically, well.....all youve done to this image is applied a color to an area, then used the black airbrush to shade it. learn to use different colors to give it a more real look, add some sweeping brushed cuts in the metal, hide the sketch lines, do more to the picture then filling inbetween lines.

your signature is very ugly too

The coloring might not be that realistic but in my eyes it fits perfectly to the sketchy style of the drawing, works really well together.
I prefer something done the right way, rather than the 'good' or eye catching way :]

>I prefer something done the right way, rather than the 'good' or eye catching way

lemme add to my prev. post.

By good, i meant 'good looking' = perfect-wonderfull-masterpiecelike-colored-GOOD.

I wouldn't take Dhab's work and put it as crap cause life ain't that colorfull as he puts it, it's a style. Regardless if i like it or not, i should accept it. If something feels wrong, i'd comment it, if it's the style i dislike but it's worked out RIGHT and well, i'd better shut up. You can't bitch about a style.

Same here, the pic is a sketch and a shaded worked out coloring wouldn't fit to it unless you get rid of the sketch and repaint everything perfectly, but then, the sketchy look would be lost.
It's a damn sketch colored a way that suits to it (if wanted or not, who cares), don't try to make something else of it. Judge it in it's own terrain, don't compare it with other finished worked out stuff.

amen.

I do not agree with you strangefate.

I think you can begin to talk about style when the artist has the skill
to do what he chooses to do and not what happens because he does not know better.

It seems to be a bit too easy to say "well, it my style".
i mean.. we all can disinguish between a good painter and a beginner. Both have their styles.

The good painter has a style because experience told him that when he works in a certain way he can achieve a result that reflects his artistic vision.

The beginner has his style too.. but not because he chooses to draw like that but because his abilities are the limit. Either the technical or the theoretical abilities.

So i think you CAN actually argue about style to a certain degree.

Sounds like if everyone is aiming to be a Boris V. People who start to draw do it for different reasons under different circumstances and different taste. That all adds from the beggining to his style. A talented artist might be drawing and coloring Simpson cartoons for 10 years, or
manga, or sketchy, it's not all Boris.

I dunno tough hif that applies here, depends if the guy took an hour or 15 mins for that.

But anyways, we should leave it there, different persons have different opinions, nothing wrong with that.

I just read that i'm probably retarded, that gives me a lot to think right now... *snob*snifh*

MY GOD PEOPLE!!!!! how old are we 5? what the hell black_fish if you dont like his painting, say "I don't like your coloring" or like just stop. I thought this was supposed to be a respectable forum where you "pro's" respected each other and helped out the newbies, not made fun of them and tried to scare them away. Alright the stuff about Alan Tew was bad but we're (hopefully) over that... What does that have to do with his coloring style?

amen strangefate. nex; either its his skill level or his style. Either way, scalding comments (from others, I didn't see any from you) and insults aren't gonna do him any good. He's posting this so he can get comments on how to improve. psi burn waylon superbug and strangefate posted comments that could help him in future coloring. I'm guessing that he posted it so that you people he respects could help him out. The point of posting is not to hear "you suck, go away", its to learn and get better!

And seriously.. i agree with strangefate. could you draw perfectly when you started out? and even if you could.. because YOU all draw in the "lifelike way", does that mean that all other art (cartoon, sketches) are not art? I actually like his coloring on Alan's sketches a lot.. its a nice change, a little different style.

ok.. im done.. cant we all just be happy and stop yelling? (hides in a corner)

I really like to see a 12 years old kiddo posting his coloring book masterpiece on a site like that. You're very goood Binder, have some more Jello and do another 'color by numbers' before going to bed. Don't stay up too late you have school tomorrow, and stop playing pokemon when I'm talking to you.

I always thought the GOOD way IS the right way.

in real life things are not just shaded with black.

black_fish indeed...

I just wanna add:
It seems that lately there is a lot of "hey here is a pic i worked on for past 5 seconds what do you guys think?" posts. Would be great to see some real effort like there was a few months back.

Shrug.

Nice sketch!

... alot of things binder has said has been misleading and/or false - I won't critique anything of his(?) or anything he does, because honestly, I do not know who's work I am critiquing.

Again, nice sketch.

<sticks head above parapet>

err, binder. you DID actually spell Alan as "Alen" on the topic line...

I don't wanna get into this tho. IMHO, this "let's get binder" thing is getting a little old. hope to see some more of your own stuff soon too.

It takes guts to post to a forum like this, and I can understand why you'd colour other people's work (hell, I was tempted when I came here at first). I think you just have to bite the bullet and post some stuff that's entirely your own - it's the only way to improve.

Posting your own stuff gives you freedom to improve composition, shape, form etc. - you can't change anything on these colouring pics, except the way you colour, so you're not going to get much help from people aside from "colour it differently"

Anyway, I can't talk as I've only posted three pics to this forum so far. Trust me, let go of the safety net of other people's guidelines.

Oh, and take everything people say here with several dozen pinches of salt : you are asking for criticism, after all
