I know i asked this already, but theres a bunch more people here now and i thought i'd ask again to see if people still want it or not.
Would you like 1 more forum added devoted to 3d modeling/animation/art?
Since this is a digital art forum, 3d artwork can be posted here just fine now, but i'm just curious to see is there enough of you out there that would like to have a seperate forum devoted to 3d art?
QUESTION: is there already another very good and popular 3d modeling/animation forum? I know of polycount which is pretty big i think, but i think thats just for low-poly modeling...i could be wrong.
lemme know what you think

Dhab,
a 3d forum would be sweet to add....There are the Nichiman, 3dmax forums that I know of and Highend3d has forums as well for maya, soft, I think.
But a 3d forum here would be sweet for some of us that do 3d as well....
Thanks for the forums...They rock...!! |

i like the way everything is thrown under one big 'digital art' title. if people need help with 3d, the 3d guru's attack.. and it works just fine, i think. most of the same logic apply's to both forms of art so i think they mesh well together in one forum.
also, if people post things in the 3d area and dont get much of a response, they might start looking for more praise or critique in the 2d forum. that would be kind of silly. |

I also somewhat like that they are intermixed. For exmaple, some 3d artists may get a lot out of Craig's tips on value and composition.
Maybe the description of the forum should be changed to show that 3d is welcome? |

I think that it is hard to seperate the two. But it would make everthing more managable.
Before when you asked I would have said no because I like it all in one big blob, but now.........I duno. if it really took of it would be good but getting no replies is bad.
IMHO I think the way you scroll through the topic when repying now blows btw.

Well then lemme expand this further
Do you think this forum should be split into more pieces?
Perhaps:
Forum1 : General questions on digital art and technique
Forum2 : Feedback gallery, post your art and get feedback
forum3 : ???
forum4 : ???
I personally prefer keeping things all in the same place, but the amount of posts going on right now makes it kinda hard to keep up
Ok, think of it this way, is the way things are now making people not happy and they wish it would change, or are people fine with it and didnt realy think its a problem until i brought it up. And you think the forum is find, but wouldnt mind splitting it up
or something

Actually Dhabih, I like the way it works right now - with everything included in one area. I think the thing that makes this forum so great is the amount of great, skilled artists that frequent here and I think splitting them up into genres would be a mistake.
I know your changing a few things right now, but I think that what you have right now is a recipe that really works, and to mess with it too much could make it loose the magic it has.
True, there are quite a few posts, but I think that's a good thing - no, a *great* thing. Having it all in one room makes it easy to pick out the messages that interest the viewer, and see updates, without having to go back and forward through tedious divisions.
So please, *please*, don't tear the forums into seperate fragment. ... kay?

It would probably be the best to keep it in one or two forums.. But it wouldnt be a bad idea to make some guidelines for people to use the subject field properly.
So.. few suggestions for subject headers:
3D: (3D related thread)
2D: (drawing & painting related thread)
WEB: (web related thread)
HW: (hardware related thread)
SW: (software related thread)
etc..
These (or other) headers could be presented to users at the forum list page so they would read it and hopefully start using them.. I guess most of the users wouldnt mind using them and probably many of the users would find the forums to be more userfriendly after this...

Not so keen on seperating different types of art, but technical stuff should go in another thread. Not that it would be stricly enforced (sometimes there are things that defy categorisation) but it is waaaayyyy to cluttered as it is. I like the ammount of posts. but I don't like having to look for them becuase eveything moves so fast. I spend a lot of time looking for stuff. and some times there are things that I would have liked to comment on but can't find the next day (or even couple of hours) and they get lost. three are also a lot of threads that get no replies at all becuase they just get pushed under before anyone can even see them.
It's like time managment. Not so much the amount of things that you have to do but the amount of time you spend pissing around. If people made an effort to keep the other topics alive then it would be better IMHO.
Not sure I like the seperation between feedback and discusion much. They are hard to seperate, much the same.
Keep the core topic (this one) and then strip off all the thigs that are not about digital art and traditional art. such as technical/harware stuff etc. maybe make another thread for specific art technique Qs and tutorials so that people can go there for advice already given.
another thing that would make everthing more managable would be better education for people seeking advice on how to get better. A big fat FAQ with links to all the threads and tuts that will get them started. Make the search buton BIGGER etc.
The thing that I find problematic is that half the Questions are ones that have been answered indepth before. maybe people could submit certian threads to be categorised in terms of help with anatomy, digital art, basics, how to get started etc. While people say to use the search it is often hard to find what you are looking for, especialy seeing as some really good info is hidden in threads with titles that are not clearly linked to what they are looking for. when Spooge has just piped up and given some killer little comments. I mean the best thing to do is look at every fred/spooge post, but it can be a task.
Damn, rambling again. *Sigh*
This subject needs serious discusion. there are obviously differing opinions.
For those that like it all in one big lump I am wondering whether you look at every thread? check back the next day? Do you have a job? (if so then I am humbled )

no, don't split it up. What makes it so great is that everyone is at the same place. I never check random musings. And, if it was like one 3d and one 2d, I'm sure one of them would be more popular than the other. And, within a short amount of time, everyone will just post in the most popular forum, just to be sure that people will see their post.

I also think its better NOT to split the forum up.
because:
1) 2d artists can profit from 3d stuff and the other way around.
2) It would take more time to read the threads.
3) It does not give the feeling that 3d is just another medium.. nothing else.
4) I think it would destroy a bit of the group feeling here.
[edit] I might refer to the artbeast forum here they have about 20 Topics.. for 2d/3d/2d traditional galleries 2d/3d/trad. questions.. etc. for everything a separate topic.. its the living hell!

hardware forum is a good idea, i think. it should eliminate a few posts as long as people are there to check it out every so often.
hmm.. i think i got a neat idea. how about editing some of those smiley faces we get to choose from with every post? replace 3 or 4 of them with little 3D, 2D, WD(web design) graphics that we can pick from before a post. they can be color coordinated, as well, to make it nice and easy to distinguish between the different type of posts. |

Rinaldo and Nex made some excellent points here. I don't think a 2D and 3D forum seperation will be benefitial to the nice atmosphere here on the forum. HOWEVER.. having said that, I do find that the speed at which the individual threads move is at times too fast. Too many posts (often with repeat questions) flooding out the real interesting ones to secondary pages where they'll die quick deaths.
I think a couple of big fat FAQ and Search buttons will help cut down the ammount of already answered newbie questions. Also as I suggested a while ago, it's probably a good idea to send the FAQ (especially Saffron's Wacom FAQ ) to newly registered members within the forum-subscription-confirmation-email (nice scrabble word there) along with some forum guidelines.
yeah..
btw.. Thanks Dhabih, for the forum.. It kicks ass..

Maybe there could be 2 forums.
One ARTY for asking art questions.
One GALLERY for showing off peoples latest stuff. |

yeah, danny does have a point. if a thread doesn't get replied to within 12 hours or so it may very well be on the next page where not too many people seem to look. i too like how its mixed media on here but i dunno man the threads fly by so fast. the seperation would seem a bit more helpful in my eyes to those who need tips, but less helpful to those who want to see everything on the forum with speed.

I think you should at least split it into a general and technique forum and then a feedback gallery. So you if one is wanting to learn something, he would be able to go to the first forum while people who want feedback for their pictures could post them seperately.
This doesn't make any sense does it?

changed my mind
this forum really grows too fast
would be nice when you split it up
1. (unfinished) pictures (2d/3d/)for feedback
2. questions about technique and other stuff

While we're on the subject of overhauls. I've seen some MBs (can't remember where) that have a few nice features implimented.
1: it shows you haw many people have viewed a thread.
2: it lets you link to second, third and beyond pages straight from the main list as opposed to going into the thread and then clicking on the extra pages.
Just wondering if these features are available but not implmented. I think it would be good to see how many people have actiualy had a look even though they have not repied. so you know if people have missed the thread or just not had anything to say.
Idunno...just thinking aloud.
[Edit: Heh...in my haste to critisise I have not yet said how much I love this Forum. Thanks sooooooooooooooo much Dhab ]

Hmm, just what if the first page of the forum would show for example 100 topics instead of the current 40? That would give people more time to check the threads before they fall down to the second page... which I guess not many of us bother to check.
I also agree with the small 2D, 3D, etc. icons, they would make the forum easier to use for those interested strictly on 3D for example. Better yet, being able to sort 2D from 3D and vice versa when needed would be nice, but still leave the possibility to have it all under one forum for those who want to check them all out.

Even though new topics have a very short shelf life these days, I want to add a vote for keeping one forum. I REALLY like the wide variety of things that pop up here, and I don't want to spend the time checking out 2, 3 or 10 extra forums. I don't think it saves us any time in the long run. I'm also on the cg-character mailing list. That's another good resource, but that list is waay to touchy about its on-topic-ness and list etiquette and yaya. People there spend so much effort berating people for going even slightly off topic. So much energy devoted to "don't post that, that's not cg-char related," "no software questions," "no movie effects questions, that was already answered two years ago," etc. It's sometimes irritating to get the digest version of that list and only find 1 or 2 posts which have some new art to look at, and 10 or 12 posts about how some guy should be banished from the list because he posted his message in html format. Fucking lighten up. I like the chaotic nature of this place. I like seeing things I might not expect to see, like the threads on composition, or how a thread that originated with an image of some generic spaceship in a very derivative docking bay might turn into a very helpful thread on theory vs practice.
Just my two cents.

I would /not/ want to see this forum become segregated by medium. I like the fact that 2D people and low-poly people and concept art people are all commenting on my renders . . . I'd hate to see that diversity of critique go away.
