This was for my friend, Robert Kirkman's comic, Battle Pope. It's irreverent fun, and I did this one out of the goodness of my blackened heart for his gallery section. It's a bit of a tongue in cheek homage to Gustave Dore's "Dante's Inferno". Oh, it is a rapidograph piece, but all the composition was designed on the computer before printing it up to transfer to good paper. Anyway, just silly fun. Too much of a rush job to turn out as good as I would've liked it to be.

BTW, thankyou to all again that critted my Bing Bong piece with the troll, bells, and the owl. Always appreciate the tough love!

The guy with the hand comeing out of his mouth looks cool. Rapidograph has never been a favorite tool of mine. No variation in line weight. I see some good control of line in there. top left there are some long lines that look freehand no? I think it is pretty important to be able to control your medium in this way. I practiced for ages drawing long lines a few milimetres apart. Then curved lines. Both slowly and fast. Heh I never quite got there but it helped a lot.
Some of the anatomy gives me trouble but anyway. Sort of reminds me of those old woodcuts.

Thankyou all for your kind remarks. Once again you guys are just too damn nice a bunch. I'm glad that many of you caught the woodcut vibe from it, because although I didn't reference anything directly (no time - had to be completed in less than 15 hours over 3 nights of noodling) I did a bit of homework using Gustave Dore's work. Tried to capture a bit of that technique. I believe someone asked about if it was freehand in portions, and I have the aching digits to prove the entire freaking thing was freehand. I wasn't aware that there were mechanical devices to aid in laying down the lines. Although, I get in that Zen zone when I'm doing that sort of meticulous work and that sort of hardware would just get in the way. This piece was actually the first time I picked up Rapidographs myself, and my initial trepidation was exactly for the reason that someone else noted: no line weight. However, I came up with the concept for the piece and the medium dictated itself (short of actually doing a real woodcut). It's a funny animal that is part pencil and part brush. I was eventually romanced by the layering of linework to achieve rendering. It was fun, but I doubt if I'll be returning to them anytime soon. It taught me volumes about b&w, and I think that was the most important benefit of the whole project in hindsight ... even if the pens get dusty in my closet for a while.
