I was just thinking a little,
very often when i show a new peice of art ive made for some of my workmates i just get an "ohh! thats a great picture" and then it ends, i want critics on background composition, light, something more then just "a nice pic". I feel that these comments arent worth very much cuz i dont learn a shit from them, its completly different when another artist make comments, it doesnt has to be an experienced one or anything, those critics just feels more valuable, something you remember, maybe its based on interest.
Another thing that bugs me is when im for example looking at the great art by Vebjorn Strommen and happens to have his Lizardbabe pic up, then people says like "hey, dont sit there watching porn!" as soon as they sees a pair of breasts on the screen, maybe theyre just try to be funny but it makes me irritated, they dont seem to take it serious.
What i wonder is how you artists out there valuables critics, how you feel about getting comments, good or bad on your artwork?
Well, enough talking (writing) from me. see ya!
Regards, Kebab |

Hehehe. I think a balance of constructive and 'ego boosting'(forgive me, I'm young) critisicm is good.
And I definetely hate it when people say "stop looking at that porn"
I have some drawings of figures in my art book and when my mates see them they start to question my gender and joke about all the naked people. "Ewww! Naked people!"
I've never been exposed to any kind of constructive criticism apart from sijun.com (that's why I keep coming back)
My art teacher is anything but a mentor and all my friends are 16-17 with no art knowledge.

Kebab, I agree with you. Just getting an "OhhhhManItsSoooooCool" response is a bit frustrating (although it's good for the ego ). That's why I like this forum, there's always somebody who's likely to critizise your work.

Well I guess it all comes down to how much artistic respect you have for the person who comments on your work. If you know they have no idea what they're talking about, why the hell should you take their comments to heart? On the other hand, if you know and respect an artist and his work and he makes a favourable or constructive comment on your own work, you can take it more seriously, having more trust their perspective.
Personally, I'd rather get criticism than praise for my artwork. Sure, if you've invested a lot of time and effort into an illustration, you want it to look good (and it helps to be reassured of this by others), but if you never get criticism on your work, never learn to see it in an objective way, how do you expect to improve? You'll just keep making the same mistakes over and over.
Anyway, that's my opinion: tell what you think honestly - don't pussyfoot around trying to spare feelings.
- oh, and if others aren't mature enough to handle nudity, that's their problem, not yours. Don't let it limit your learning and your own art. Personally, I've got no problem with it - in fact I'm naked right now
... kidding! :P

In the same way that an interface design or web site has to be tried out with real users who may or may not know how things are "supposed" to be, and in the same way a writer needs non-writers to review their material, I think you need to ask for honest criticism from a non-visual artist.
They won't be able to tell you HOW to correct your mistakes, but they can tell you how the work affects them - their vision is not filtered through a technical-skill view first.
that's just my two cents, anyways -- maybe i just do it to escape from working on real technique ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Actually, extralobe, I totally agree with you. I was probably a bit strong with what I said. I *do* value the opinions of non-artistic people, and they are an *incredibly* valuable screening tool - just them spotting something that looks 'wrong' is invaluable criticism.
What I was thinking of was in terms of finished work. I would much rather an artist I respect say "wow, that's really good" than hear the same thing from the guy who lives over the fence. I'm not trying to say that they are any less important, or their opinions are worthless, but personally, from an artistic point of view, I have more confidence in the fellow artists view of the situation.

I say tell me anything and everything, no matter if you're Spooge, or a 3 year old ADD kid.

rdgraphix: ah, yes - we are of the same opinion then. Sorry I misunderstood.
anthony: if you're getting 3 year old ADD kids to even look at your image long enough to notice it, then you must be /quite/ the artist! ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

I'm always in it for the ego boost, but it does get old fast.
Of course, I don't take constructive criticism too well, it usually makes me more discouraged, hehe.
Shrug.

ya ya
i honesly want to know opinions and have a fresh mind, one that is not caught up in mine take a look.. kinda like looking at an olde pice of artwork you haven't seen in a while and noticing how bad you SCREWED UP
ok.
i honeslty like to find how my art hits people, how they take the blows which is my mind on paper or something like that. encouragement *cough*ego boost*cough* is not all bad, i look at it as a reward of some sort, making you kinda proud to be who you are, not to mention hard work.
i hate when people make no effort to think. i hate when people are lazy to look deeper than what's fed to them. that includes brainless comments and opinions full of hot air.
