I worked a bit more on it..

Self critique:
composition is too crowded, background/depth missing... figures look weird and are maybe misplaced here..

Rip it apart please.

Hmmmmm coupla problems i personally think. The Figures are misplaced. And the wierd tree like trunk thing in the background also seems kinda odd mainly because it takes away from the sense of scale. That's what I think. More moutains would be nice, or make the tree things have HUGE branches or sumthing with leaves. How about making it like the EWOK village with little lights and all. that would provoke a greater sens of scale.

but its really comming along well, i like the atmosphere it provokes....reminds me of dune...i dont know why...

Hiya Nex!

I really like some of the updates there and I think you've got the atmospherics really well done for the tree stumps. However, I agree that some long branches on those trees would be super cool!

Ok, Nexxer, there we go:

* Like the topic ... got a faible for alien enviroments.

* Nice composition - you got a foreground that works, and then the whole thing unfolds to the horizon

now the stuff that jumped into my eye:

* why don't you put the guys in shadow? The light comes from the left, and the rock would put them in shadow. UI tried it out in PS and it helps adding space

* the rock tower to the right is nicely hazed, the one on the left is quite contrasty, even though it seems to be further away than the other one.

* maybe defining the shape of the tower on the right helps too - remember spooge saying "shape is everything'

* since the light is quite low, introducing some sunset color might add a nice color-diversity.

* the rockformation in the far distance is a little bit too faint for my taste - on the other hand, I could be full of shit ...

I hope I wasn't too brutal - but your pic inspired me, because there's definetely a nice foundation - keep going, it will be a cool one!

*slaps self on back of the head*

damn.. why did I not come to it.. of course the figures should be in the shadow and the big rock beside them could cast a shadow too... thanks loki for your suggestions!

superbug, ceenda: thanks, I will try to play with that tree thing in the back a bit.

ex: uhm.. ahh.. crater... oops totally forgot that *sheepishgrin*

Well Nex, when I first saw the origianl I liked it alot because of the lonliness that it evoked. Your picture (original pic) presented the possibility that you are totally alone on this planet and are perhaps the first being in the universe to ever have seen this vista. Perhaps (because I like this kind of art) you coould extend the horizon and simpily lose the figures. But try both approaches. I will be looking forward to hear of what you think!

Thanks for you comments Ian.
I agree that the original picture had more atmosphere to it.. on the other hand I had the feeling that something was missing in there.

I REALLY liked ceenda's version because it kept the atmosphere and added some "otherworldly" feeling which was exactly what I had in mind from the beginning.

maybe I will go back to the original PS file and work in the other direction and then compare.

I will post changes and new versions on my website in some time.

thank you all for your help.
