We simply draw faster
If I were you I'd use less blury tools and focus on sharper edges. If you are using a Mouse it pays to have the biggest image your comp can handle so you can zoooooom in and make your wobbly mouse strokes less visible.
Your using very "plastic" colours. Have a look at green islads in photos. they are very dark. things tend to get lighter as they receed as well. ther drawing is also a bit off. your horizon is slopeing and some of the pespective makes me uncomfortasble (thought I be unable to understand or explain why). My main crit of this pic tho is that it has no real interest. You can draw anything you want. Knock yerself out. I mean the pic just seems to be....I dunno....Boring?
I know I'm being a harsh prick here but I think there is so much more you could do with an image like this (looking out to sea etc.). if the pic was more interesting it would attract less attention to the technique, and I would imagine that you would find it more interesting and thus do a better job.
Hope I've helped. You didn't ask for a crit so I'm a bit hesitant writing all this pic bashing |

I like this ektodude. It has inspired me. It makes me think of my home here around Pt. Dume in LA. The afternoon sun comes up behind it and glares off the foggy mists, almost too bright to look at.
Then I started thinking of Drake coming here the first time. I have seen this color in the foam of the ocean break many times at just the right time of year and evening. I swear it is that purple.
I think there is too much emphasis on technique and skill here. I know, you think that's easy for me to say with the fancy pants art edu, and you are right.
Technique is an illusion, and I had to get technique before I realized that.
But remember, I said too much emphasis is bad. A little is good. Gotta have the tools, then forget about them, fast.
How about a rule, you have to break at least one rule a painting. Except the preceeding one.

Well... no sea around, so here is a view from my window ouch... night is coming, colors and shadows changes really fast so i've only 10-15 min for drawing.
Cheers,

EktoDude,
I think what spooge tried to show you with that first image, was to get the basic things like perspective and colors right before you start to shade and shodow.
If you look at spooge's one, it's less details but it still has more depth to it.
I'm not trying to be a dork, just didn't seem like you grasped his pointers. Sorry about that, I'll go back to my cave now, ciao.
Oh, and nice picture spooge ! Do you really have that nice view from your house ?

ektodude :
I don't work in the same place as joachim, but the place where i work is only about 250 meters away from where joachim works, and i visited his workplace last sunday, that's all
and no, i'm not new to illustrations, but i am new to graphic tablets. I used to do some oilpainting a long time ago, which i had to quit doing due to lack of time (studies etc.). I also did some pixeling on the c64, and some graphics on pc, but not that much.. i have some more time available now though, so i ordered a tablet to (try to) do some serious stuff.. *cough*

Spooge- would you care to elaborate a bit more on your insightful comments? The meaning of the words technique and skill are a bit hazy due to their overuse. I hesitate to strike up a conversation about what you just said due to my uncertainty as to what you are implying.
By querying your comments I am in a way being a technique monger (hanging upon your every utterance) which troubles me no end. But I have had thoughts that strike a chord with my perception of what you are dancing around with your comments on "technique is an Illusion". The first question that a beginner asks one he admires is almost invariably: "what size pen do you use". A comment that the inquirer will look back on with amusement as time passes.
Your sort of comment is what I would imagine common to experienced artists. An increased interest in what you are drawing as opposed to how/with what you are drawing it. And a lesser adherance to the clean cut "rules" (if I am correct in my understanding of your comments).
I gather that you are not implying that the novice bypass technique. But are you possibly implying that there is a better way of going about things as opposed to the initial infatuation with technique followed by as you say "forgetting about them fast"? Or are you just pointing out the interesting transformation/revelation?
Maybe this sort of topic might fit in your 3Dpalete column?
Anyway I dig your second pic
EktoDude- in my blunt and hasty technical demeanour I forgot to welcome you to this fine Forum...so errr....Welcome

Here on the OR coast, on certain lucky sunsets, the colors are just amazing. The water turns this luminous green... the sky a blazing orange, and the white sand drinks it all into this deep purple. This digicam shot a friend snagged doesn't really convey the feeling, it's truely awsome.
It's definately things like this that stay in your mind, that inspire you as an artist to steal from your god, your universe, take a piece of that beauty into yourself and use it to recreate your own.
I first found goodbrush.com ages ago... and recently rediscovered it again, and this forum along with it. I just wanted to say what many have said, thankyou Craig, you've definately inspired, and I always come away from looking at what you offer, trying to clutch a piece of beauty. |
