Hey guys, i just wondering what's happen with Craig? Does he change his style, his vision? I saw a lot of his new images here on forum and they are mainly "quick-stroked" or fast painted studies/sketches. Where are full complex images like Roboplane (Bandai poster) or Soulblighter from Myth2 game? Of course those sketches are really useful and helpful for us but how about "hi-end" drawings?

I'm sure he'd do some nice detailing if ya paid him.
Might have to mortgage your house tho
"quick-stroked" or fast painted studies/sketches = more pics for us, and more fun for spooge.

People said the same about the Warhammer 40k/Games Workshop artist John Blanche when he went from his huge pencil works to a quick line & ink style of work.
What you have to take into account is that spooge's stuff, like Blanche's is not done overnight and I don't doubt many professional artists have much time on their hands out of contracts.
Spooge's latest stuff, IMHO, speaks volumes about the kind mood, atmosphere and scene which looks so effective done quickly, as the artist is probably trying to put the point across in just a few strokes of the brush.

In other words.. Spooge does not have time to detail all his paintings or osmetimes he feels that they dont need detail. Also he may be too busy working on "car whores" *wink*

I rarely wax rhapsodic, but...
I believe the latest works are evidence of the evolving style of a true artist who isn't resting on his laurels. From my perspective, Craig's looser work is far more sophisticated than the tighter work he has done in the past. It is more evocative without relying on his admittedly brilliant rendering skills. To be able to capture mood, light and form so acurately and quickly is remarkable. I completely sympathize with Craig's previously stated wish (I think on the post about a rejected HALO piece) that he could just stay loose. The image already says all it needs to say.
I feel with a lot of work I could aspire to reaching the technical level of some of Craig's earlier finished work (basically a photoshop adaptation of 'SYD MEAD'-style I.D. gouache rendering). It's a very effective technique for pre-production visualization. But the latest work really has a style of its own, truly exploiting the medium. For me this stuff marks a transition from illustration to true art. That's where the true inspiration lies.
In my humble opinion.
Carry on Craig. |
