I'd work on the line work more, and forget the shading for now. It's just making them muddy. Until you can get the shapes better, no shading will help. So turn out lots of quick shape paintings and drawings, forgetting detail for now.

get some books from the library on anatomy and traditional drawing, they'll help you much.
