I know that Spooge Dragon attended ACCD, where I was expelled from. I am curious about other folk's art background, like Fred. Fred's drawing style is definitely Art Center style, which I never bothered to emulate. Which art colleges did you guys attend? I plan to transfer back to CSU Long Beach next fall..

Let me jump in here and defend Fred. His work has little in common with Accd style. It uses a lot of contrast, that is very ID like, but the approach to the figure is totally different.

What did you do to get expelled? I almost flunked, but I think now that was a gambit to get me to have to retake classes and pay them a lot more money.

Hey Fred, in digging through those old drawings I found some Steve Houston material (which I will scan and post for you) It's pretty nice.

Eh...the reason why I got expelled? Certainly not because of poor grade.

The true reason is......(drumroll)

Verbal harrasment. Hehehe.

Quite a temper I have had. Maybe the true reason why I never get reaccepted is that I didn't seem to afford Art Center and the victim was more than able to afford tuitions (read:FILTHY RICH). More over...eh...eh... The victim was a WASP female of upperclass background. it's hard to live with quasi-anti American semi-communist sentiment since my Law school years in Korea... @_@

So, I am forced to transfer to CSULB. I wonder if they have an on-campus recruitment like Art Center.

BTW, I was called 'THE ROBOT GUY' because I always drew robots back in Art Center.

Funny, I grabbed the sense of color theory and anatomy 'after' I got expelled from Art Center... I am a slow learner.

Finally, I know that Spooge majored in trans. design first and remajored in Illustration later.

I did two years of mostly fine art classes at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno. Hardly prestigious, but for a CC it had a very solid art program (better than UNR's anyway).

wow. that's pretty need... speaking on this topic.. next year I'll be out of high school and I'm trying to do my research on a school early. they way that it is right now I'm going to need a scholarship, but that's really not a problem with my grades. problem is, I'm not sure if these are schools grant scholarships based on grades or your portfolio. now, I'm interested in illustration, however, I'm not as good as everyone else in here, probably because I've never been formally taught. my high school art instructor focuses more on the creative side of art.. which perhaps he should do for high school art. so the problem is I've never really had formal teaching like Fred and spooge have been posting to the forum about how the head is shaped, etc. so it's going to be really hard for me to make an impressive illustration portfolio without that knowledge. so, basically with all this gibber-jabber, I was wondering if there was any colleges or universitys that have a good art program. I figure I can get a good design degree and then go back to an art college for my hidden desire of illustration. any help is appreciated.

haha School? High School..wait no..I don't take an art class...but seriously..

When I get to college..what subject should I take. I'm into digital art...but I'm not sure I can take that in college. Can someone enlighten me on the courses offered? I like ID style also, but want to be able to learn a variety of styles/techniques.

Thanks Spooge.

I wish I graduated from a school, can't say that I did. I have been drawing my whole life. My mother is a fine artist, specializes in fine art jewelry. I learned a lot from her as a kid. I also had an ACCD instructor at the JC I attended during and after high school. I have gone to classes everywhere, including ACCD, but not graduated from anywhere. The bulk of my learning has been in the school of hard knocks, and at Jeff Watts Atelier, Associates in Art, and California Art Institute.

The design side of me came from years of working as a designer for snowboard and skateboard companies...yes, they have design requirements too... , and from the design classes I took, including my ACCD Product design class-night class-student instructor...

And now, I learn from Wacomonkey, Francis, Spooge, Micke, Joachim, Loki, Frost, Tinusch, Ceenda, Ozenzo, Samdragon, Rinaldo, Sumaleth, RDGraffix, and the rest of this forum. Even my students teach me new things everyday...you would be surprised where you get info...

no graphic education except for those addon classes i atended at regular shool. (which didnt learned anything about techniq)

harrasing people because they come from a rich bg is realy stupid, its not their fault that they are rich is it? and its probaly not your fault that you come from a poor bg.

some people have to work more to achive less, and some people have to work less to achive more, thats just the facts of life, and its nobodys fault.

but harrasing people realy sucks!

I went to a now closed down replica of Fame. Newark School of Fine and Industrail Arts in NJ. A bunch of unserious flaky artist types, justifying why they really didn't have talent. It really sucked, what you got from it, depended on what you put into your studies. I guesss that applies to anything!
Then I went to the Art Students League, and studied under a man named Peter Homitzky. I learned alot, but most of my knowledge came from the school of life.

Um...OK.

I am a kind of person who believe that traditional training on drawing and painting is more important than anything else in art field. (also sculpture...)

I feel really funny about those who in Illustration major in ACCD who just throw out their hard earned skill and goes back to weird ass crackhead editorial illustration style. If they wanna do the same thing folks from other colleges do, why in the heck do they pay nearly or more than a hundred thousand bucks for ACCD?

BTW, I still suck at color theory and anatomy. My goal is to draw people (with or without drapery) with minimal or no reference. Why...? Because I was a comicbook artist back in Korea. 99% of comicbook artists in Korea have nearly zero knowlege on anatomy and color theory...-_-; The reason why emphasize on anatomy and color is that they are my weak points.

My influences are from : Andrew Loomis, Gil Elvgren. Ikuto Yamashita. Tom Browning. Hajime Katoki and lots of illustrators from Art Institute of Chicago. When I was very young I was heavily influence by Go Nagai, the creator of Mazinger Z, and then of Mamoru Nagano, who is a famous production designer and comicbook artist in Japan. But since I started to study art in US, I became hating those two asses to death. Go Nagai is a total wreck. Mamoru Nagano is a lazy crackhead with no sense of 3 dimensional space.

Now my favorite comicbook artists are... Kentaro Miura and those guys who created Dark Mind. Kentaro Miura is the creator or BERSERK, which is my favorite manga series. This guys seems to have had classical art training. (at least he majored in art back in collge, unlike many other artists in Japan.) This guy sucks in color, but seems to have TREMENDOUS knowlege on anatomy and composition. That's what makes him separated from other manga artists.

Finally, anyone from Art Institute of Chicago...? I just wonder...

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is ACCD the no.1 art school in the States or is it just popular with many people on the board?

Anyway, sijun.com is quite a good school of sorts.

I'm mildly terrified that spooge and Fred are going to be billing us soon...

I tried taking some classes. They tried to get me to stop drawing bleeding people and naked women so I said "Fuck you!" and left.
And on another note... I hate people that are born into rich families. They have everything handed to them on a silver platter, and never really earn anything for themselves.

No No No....I mean....

I found that she was filthy rich afterward. @_@ I was simply jealous because she was one super hot chick from East Coast. She was so hot that shoe wouldn't need a proper skill to get a job. probalably she could get a quick promotion on a couch. She was a model back in NY and Paris, duh.

But what the heck. Thanks to the probation now I can plan for much cheaper art education.

And the quality of Art Center is going down. Anyone can get in as long as you are RICH.

If you find a good school with good instructors, then GO. Get two jobs if you have to. It's the logical thing to do, and it'll pay for itself down the road.

The last art classes I took were in High School, and none of the teachers could draw or paint. One was a photographer, and one was a sculpter. So I learned about nil from them. I did 3d for money, since it's less competitive(well it IS ), but now I'm getting more into 2d, probably because of Craig and Ron mostly(and others here). In about 5 weeks I'll be starting background and object concept design for an upcoming XBox RPG, which should be a blast. Not like working on Car Whores: Piealamode Deux, but fun. Maybe I'll learn to draw more industrial design style in the process.
