Help please? and perhaps some pointers on the Hand how I can improve it? unfortunatly i drew my right hand i kept holding it up for reference but its not turning out right... cant seem to get it just right... HELP pwease *stressin*
This is the reduced Version the original that im working on in PS is 1000x1030 pixels

whoah 12am..I should be sleeping...way past my bed time but oh well
looks nice, but I think it could use some contrast. The picture looks dull and muddy without it, especially the hair. If you're using photoshop, the way I do hair is I use a fine point smudge tool and start smudging strands of hair in. I color in the darker values and smudge those over the lighter values(two seperate layers). But that's about all I know how to do:P good luck! |

I will post an image tomorrow, but you need to think in form. Just as the head is a rounded cube, so the hair os a shape of form too. In this case, your hair shape is more sloped than round, but it rounds up at the top of the skull.
Highlights occur where the hair changes planes. So do shadows. Think planes, cylinders, spherical shapes, etc. And look and GIl Elvgren to get a better idea of what I am saying without an image to support it. Gil was the man. He did hair better than anyone I have seen. And he did it in masses. Just like the planes of the face, you also want your hair shapes to be pleasing to the eye. Right now, you have broken up the form by ripping through the hair shape with ribbons of light.
When you look at the hair, squint your eyes so you cannot see the details, this will help you see the big forms the hair is shaping into... |

oHH WOW Thanx for the Awesome Feedback!
Yea I noticed the colors were muddy, I used the color levels option and brought some more life and contrast into it but i decided to continue to work with the muddy colors till i finished painting the picture and then go back and brighten it up...
And thanx fred for the tips on the hair, i guess i never really thought about breaking the hair up into shapes as well. I sorta just outlined the overall shape but didnt think about any other shapes that could be within the hair. As for the streaks of light in the hair... i was kinda just using those as a guideline for where the highlights generally lay. Because I haven't got the foggiest idea (untill now) on how to go about creating the hair, and i wanted to make sure i knew where the highlights are... but i will definetly take your advice thanx for the comments!.....ohh ohh.... and any advice on that darn hand of hers? its really buggin me...

The framing you've chosen makes the hand look like it's missing the pinky finger .. perhaps add it back in, curled up like the 4th finger?
it looks a bit masculine, maybe try smoothing out the shading on the fleshy pad and the fingers. it may be that it looks slightly too big, i can't tell (i'm hardly a professional )
i like the angle you chose for the head - it's gonna look awesome once you paint in highlights and details on the hair! |

Sadly Enough im Posting again... I appreciate all the feed back i've recieved so far... check this I updated the pic a bit thanx to the comments i've recieved so far... so here iz whut i got so far...
what I did here was, add some more canvas to the left of the picture to completely include the hand as well as the cigarette, which i think looks alot better.. I also put in the the underlying colors i thought the hair should be built upon. I still dare not try to draw the hair... i tried wiked ewoks selection but, lol, she looked like she just woke up and her hair was all buck wild.. any other techniques? maybe someone could post an example of a style or technique for hair, or one that would work well with this pic.
I tried to section off the hair in shapes.. dunno i drew in some lines so you can see how i did the shapes... i think i might have used to many shapes to get the idea.. maybe not exacly what Fred had in mind LOL!
maybe someone could correct my lines or offere better guidelines? or am i just clueless and totally off the mark? TANX for the feedback tho! i really appreciate it!
