I used to be a huge comic collector, however, I have not even thought of entering a store to purchase for a long time now. Just became discouraged by alot of the hacks that were being churned out at the time.
By frequeting this forum my interests have returned in maybe checking out a few titles. Since I know alot of the people who are members here, do like comics, what are some good suggestions or recommendations you might throw my way, which you think are currently some good titles.
For an idea on what I used to like as a collector. I typically didn't collect specific titles, except the usuals. I did however, enjoy buying specific artists, writers, etc. My favorite artist had to be Byrne, but I also liked the Title "Elementals," the artists name doesn't come to me at the moment, but the title was, I believed published by Comico. Well, whatever!!!!
So, for those of you who are in the know concerning this question, any recommendations you might have would be greatly appreciated.
and again titles with influence on some good art is what I'm really interested in
thanks for you time

Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai (my pers. favorite of several years now...)
Poison Elves by Drew Hayes
Anything by Masamune Shirow
Kabuki by David Mack (fan-fucking-tastic)
Milk and Cheese by Evan Dorkin and along the same lines (absurd violent humour); Sam and Max by Purcell (Tank Girl also worth checking out).
Gunsmith Cats for all your guns, girls and cars fetishes.
That oughta keep you occupied for a while.

Ok since you are familiar with most of the stuff ,here's some more comics that I recommend checking out:
Akira (watch out for the hype though, you might be dissappointed, 'cause it's "just" a comic after all. )
Katsuhiro Otomo's other work "A Child's Dream" is imho much better than Akira. It's also dying to be a movie. Definately worth looking at.
Dirty Pair by Warren Adam and I can't believe I forgot Frank Miller's Sin City!
/me is ashamed of himself.
I also liked the First 3 or 4 of the Pinis' Elfquests, but then it sorta got old... |

I have some favorites, but ah, I dunno. Heh, depends on your taste. I haven't been to the comic shop in months.
Fathom- Michael Turner does lovley art, and, it's got sea people. =)
Witchblade- when michael left the penciller they replaced him with didn't compare. But, then they got another one, with talent (laughs), and I started buying again. I love the story and all, but a subpar penciller just ruins it for me.
Battlechasers- just 'cuz. It's fantasy and I dig fantasy. Joe Madureira's style relflects his sense of humor, and he creates very, um, interesting characters.
Danger Girl- I uh, don't read it anymore because like I said, haven't been to the store in forever and never pick up titles regularly. J. Scott Campbell's style is very recognizable. He loves drawing tongue-in-cheek smut, but as a girl I can overlook that and realize that he has definite talent.
And my favorite, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac! Jhonen Vasquez is my god. I sacrifice overcooked noodles to him on a bimonthly basis.
There are some random indie titles I liked, but I'm not even sure if some of 'em are still around. Bone is good, though. =)
Hope those are decent. I like 'em... |

Count, very familiar with Miller's stuff, but not the others mentioned. And since you seem to have a predilection towards the Japanese influences. What are some good animes you would suggest, I have seen
Ghost In The Shell
Vampire Hunter D
Akira
The Robotech stuff
and I kind of like Hayao Miyazaki stuff.
Anymore you could think of. And thanks again your being really helpful, I appreciate it

I used to buy comics a few years ago. Most of the comic stores in my area closed down due to the rise in popularity of video games.
General, if you want to know wich comics sell the most buy a magazine called Wizard. I hope this helps you.
Blakk, if you want I will give you some spawn comics if you wash my car. Also why don't you feed your cat so he dosen't eat your comics! Just a sugestion. |

Blakk
you scare me, and you live in Jersey also. (note to self - move to another state)
Thanks for the recommendations Count Zero, and Shadowman, I have heard of Gunsmith, and of course Usagi. I have seen Shirow's work but never realized who was doing it (real nice stuff), never a big fan of Milk and Cheese, but the other suggestions I will look into.
Anyone else, I know you guys are bursting with knowledge about this stuff
