Might be because MetaCreations doesn't own the rights to it anymore. It got bought out by Corel. Try their website here.

I emailed Corel recently asking if there was a demo of Painter available and all he gave me was a handful of support phone numbers from around the world. "Call the one closest to you"

There is a version called Painter Classic that comes with a number or Wacom's Tablets, not nearly as powerful, but its still a very nice program. You may be able to find it as a demo (or at least dirt cheap) somewhere.
