I followed Spooge's example of using movie cinematography of dramatic lighting. I've been practicing with color but I think I'm tightening up too much.
Anyway, here's another pic. I haven't gotten a lot of feedback on the pics I've posted, but I'm still plugging away.

Hey moze, looks good. I like the neck structure.
Check the proprtions of the eyes, they seem very widely spaced.
Try to paint the structure of the left eye. Looks REALLY hard at your reference( if you are using any) to see the subtle value shifts that indicate the larger masses of the eye. You have painted the graphic aspects of the eye, so it looks a little stuck on. You can get away with it easier cause it is in shadow.
Read that description of how sargent would paint that I have on my site. Features last, structure first. |

nice job
but it seems to me
that the lightning right and under the lips isn't correct
although it's a ,,quicky''
you have painted this area in an unclean manner
Like it anyway

Guys;
Thnx for the feedback. Yes, this is Saffron, but it's not the "just killed a shark" look, it's the "my friend was just eaten by a shark" look.
Spooge;
I didn't worry so much about the spacing of the eyes (contribute that to "style" heh). But I did have many problems with the eye in shadow (and the other for that matter). I tried working in subtle changes to show the depth and roundness of the structure but to no avail. And the reference isn't much help. I had a lot to contend with two light sources. Oog.
I'm going to move on to other pics for practice, but I'm going to really focus on some excercises on things like basic lighting and structure.
