A further indulgence in movie photography. Ridley scott blue haze. The reference is from the crow movie. It is fun to pause the VCR and try to capture what you see before the tape breaks. Even though this very tied to the photography, I learned a lot about a different way of lighting the head, and can apply that knowledge to someting later out of my head.
On the good news front, I've been asked to work on the next, um, top secret project from Lucasfilm. Rhymes with car whores.
Spoooge! |

I love that ear part. Kruger did the same thing on that James Dean charicature. The subtle purple comming up on the face and the highlights on the glasses looks really nice!
"Car whores"...
Just something i could dream about Are you gonna work as a production painter? designer? Matte-painter?
Congratulations!

spooge, that is kick ass !!!
Love the light and gloving areas (it's nice that you can actually make such a dark pic, but by putting a few glowing areas in the right places in can look so exciting), and the way the skin inside the ear is a bit transparent because of that red dot, is really cool . It's just those things I would never think of without having a photo, and maybe not even then .
Wow, you must be proud to get the chance of working on a Lucasfilm movie, that's like every artists dream project.. sure it's not Bar Horse the movie is called
-Make sure to post all the art you make and get a hold of from the film, mmkay ?
oh and, I think you are perfect for such a job. Epic backgrounds and great tech design.
Wanna do a deal, you carve my name and face into a rock , or a neon sign or something in a mattepainting(like the Rushmore mountain) so I can watch the movie and see myself and in return I can...,hum, eh, damn, I have nothing that I can offer you

Awesome Craig- got that light glinting off the glasses and ear real well!
I hope you can help to give the next car whores a lot more plot than the last one. I was quite let down when it was all special effects and little plot.
Good luck! |

You rule Craig! I would love to work on the sequel to Coyote Ugly.. "Bar Floors!"
Anyway, painting is pretty sweet. You should get a DVD player an toss that VCR though. All the concept art that comes on DVDs now I'm surprised you don't have one already. Now with your new found flow from George it should be an easy purchase.
By the way.. I thought it was from "The Professional" at first glance. |

Wow. Nice pic, but I'm even more impressed by the good news -- It'll be most amazing to work with such great talents -- (frost bows his head in respect to thee.)
Congratulations Craig! |

Dude, that is great news, that would be a fun project to work on. Not to mention a great addition to your resume!
Congrats!
BTW the pic is great also! The Crow is an awesome movie, it is sad that they turned the property to crap.

I've always wanted to do the pause thing but my player is only 2 head so it's all fuzzy.
I use a digital camera on the TV sometimes. If you get it at the right angle it can give a recognisable result (thats not saying much). I was thinking of getting a DVD player to pause and draw from. does anyone know how well this will work?
Anyway nice pic as always. I'm not sure the cigarette comes together tho. Seeing as you had ref I can't really go shouting not realistic but it just looks like a white and red blob. I didn't really see the image as a whole at first. wouldn't it be more a grey stick with some red embers glowing?
I'm just picken holes though, it looks great.
Ohh, and congrats on getting in on that project. we probably won't be able to see anything for ages tho. And does this mean that you'll be too busy to do some more spoogey sketches

Hey Craig!
Very nice piece. Very impressionistic. The little halos of light look really nice.
Hey, major congrats on Far Shores! That should be fun... I hope they're paying you enough Hey Doug had told me that he'd tried to get you a while ago (maybe for the "first installment"?), but you weren't up for it. What changed? Or is this a matte painting gig? |

Craig, what the hell dude. Is there no end to your maddness? I have been telling my students for years now to do just this, freeze frame a seen in a movie and quicksketch it. With VCR's they only hold for five minutes. Perfect quicksketch length. But with DVD's all that goes out the door.
And I never told them to paint off the screen. Damn you suck...
Congadulations on the job...I never understood why they didn't have you on that job from day one. Yeah, no more cheesy mattes. A few of them in E1 looked totally fake to me, and I think only you are the one that could convincingly pull it off.
Could you possibly take a few months off from your art so we could catch up to you?...hehe...oh and I loved that tank rendering you did. I will post mine from our composition class last semester. Maybe you could give me a few composition ideas with color treatment since that was my achilles heel to the peice.

congrats on the "car whores"..that didn't sound right did it?
So i guess this means we get to see some of your work in the "Art of car whores II"?
I hope you can share some of the things you might learn or some of the new ideas that you develope while working on that.
This is truely some great news. I agree with Fred about the last movie having crappy mattes. Now you go there and show em how it's done!

Great image, Spooge.
And congrats on car whores. I guess maybe that's where the shape design practice is going(?). Anyway, that's great. Your career has been interesting to watch thus far. I suspect your name will be known to the design world the way it's known here. Kudos! |
