Yeah GFXartist would be a good idea. It'll get you some more attention as well. Otherwise you might want to try redrival.com.

Chapel, I think Liquid2k has a product line as well, so that helps out. I have some space there, but no page as of yet, and as far as I know there aren't any catches. I read the eula pretty well, or at least I hope so. As far as I know they dont get to cut out your tongue and claim it as theirs..

I would like to recommend Thinkhost. You can get really EXCELLENT hosting for a decent price. I use them for hosting Harnish Studios

You can get 40 MB of space for only $10.00 a month including custom CGI scripts, FTP access, virtual/vanity domains, Perl, C/C++, TCL, Python, PHP4, SSI, MySQL, FrontPage 2000 extensions, unlimited POP3 email, etc.

Check it out:

Hey guys, I work for www.winwood.net

It's not free hosting, for about 20 bucks a month you get unlimited space and everything.

Check it out

I feel the answer is obvious. You're after my... inheritance....

This is a great list, guys. As the beast would say, "A google thank-yous."

Why, maybe I'll add my own! .ca extentions are soon to be available to yer average joe (as opposed to businesses only) at http://www.internic.ca but they're wickedly expensive. However, I'm a patriotic bastard, so up with maple syrup and... and Molson. Yeeeah.

a friend and I just went in together for spot with cihost.com for his business page and my playground...ooh, apache server ) -- they had a special deal where we got 1gb space, unlimited bandwidth, cgi, ftp, telnet, unlimited POP3 accounts, 15 million other little options (okay, I exagerate, it's only 14 million), and my favorite - PHP , but they're a bit overkill for what someone with a personal homepage would need.

Once you've gotten to use a server where you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, you'll never go back.

So you could round up a few people and go in together on a paid host -- cost a bit to get setup with the server's setup fees and internic registration (domain name registration), but it'd be cheap and permanent after that with a few people paying.

Otherwise definetly try for what Spitfire and Chapel were saying -- get an art site to host you. It would mean extra traffic just by being there. best of luck in deciding

On a more serious note, id advise you not to get a domainname at this moment in time. Soon, a new IP system will be taken into use, and will be accompanied by new extensions (other than .com, org etc.). This will most likely result in older domainnames becoming free or extremely cheap. The NIC can't hold her monopoly position forever.

Time101- How have you found cihost so far? I'm looking for a host, and they sound extremely cheap for what they offer. How good are they?

Build yourself a sun box and co-locate at one of the internet backbone companies. It's the only way to go.

My host is Hostsave ( http://www.hostsave.com ) and I've been having some problems lately. Right now my site is down, and this happens more than I like. I think I may be shopping around soon as well.

My site is on webjump...
http://nvsmanga.webjump.com

it's pretty fast, but has a shity frame bar at the top, but other than that, it's coo. 25 megs of space, and pretty neat URL.

Or you can build your own internet site using a copper wire and piece of cheese. Hell, McGuiver could do it!

Let's say, hypothetically of course, a certain someone was looking for a host with which he or she might showcase his or her work. And let's say, for example, that said person had no friggin' idea where to go beyond crappy ass geocities and yahoo! pages. Where would said person look? And would said person be satisfied with this domain's webhosting capabilities? And while we're at it, would the real Slim Shady please stand up, please stand up, please stand up? I'm dying to see Christina Aguilera kick his ass West Side Story style.... (Snap, snap, snap.)

Hypothetically speaking, I'm sure.

I would suggest you try and finish your site where it is at right now. So you can have something more to show to whomever might host you. After you get a few more pictures to show then you might want to try to see if gfxartist.net would host you. That is who I used to get that geocities monkey off my arse.

You are far to cheerful for this time in the day. No offense, of course.

If I may recommend a service to you, I would suggest liquid2000. No banners, fast, ftp access, 20mb's of space. the url just happens to be http://www.liquid2k.com

I would suggest going to a real host and forget the free ones.. they all have problems...my host only charges me $99.00 (Canadian Funds) for 99 megs of space per year and I get telnet access, cgi access mysql, etc...they have a few fat ds3 pipes connected to the canadian backbone so its pretty quick.....its pretty hard to beat that price for that service
there addy is http://www.tera-byte.com

Doesn't Geocites claim ownership of anything you put on your site.
I was about to sign up a while back and I read that bit, my hand went straight to the back button. Anyone head of any horror stories concerning this?

immi, I haven't been with them long enough to really say, we just got the IP up and still have to get them to transfew our domain to cihost (they're being slow). They have another "special" deal up, I checked yesterday, and for what you get, it's a killer deal, especially the sheer amount of diskspace. However, my friend and I haven't had a chance to really see how reliable they are (the last host was reliable as far as up-time, they just were stupid and kept saying stuff was installed like perlDBI and PHP when it wasn't).

Spitfire! Can you point me in the direction to find out some stuff on the new IP scheme? I'd be really curious about it and have heard rumors, but nothing solid. I must just be on the slow end of information here and my info-addiction is making me twitch (It's worse than crack! )

Rinaldo -- I haven't heard anything about geocities claiming rights to all your material, but that's certainly a scary idea

Time, all i know so far is that we're running out of IP numbers so we're gonna gonna make them longer. This will most likely be combined with more specific extensions IE .store, .sex, .look - whatever they come up with.

uhhhh... http://free.prohosting.com had a good deal going, if I remember correctly. You'll have to look into the details yourself, but I think you get free pop account, 20MB and some other stuff, although the deal might have changed... and your address is dependant on which of their servers you get... it will end up being something like: http://lightning.prohosting.com/~something/
